Phantom Legion
In March 2011 the Mukwonago High School Marching Band made the announcement that they would be changing their name to the Phantom Legion. Along with the name, the band changed their identity by investing in new uniforms. The Phantom Legion was chosen to represent Wisconsin in the 2011 National Independence day parade in Washington DC.
Mascot Controversy
During the 2009-2010 school year, a Mukwonago High School senior filed a complaint to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction claiming that the Indians mascot and logo were racially discriminative against Native Americans. The school fought the accusations, but on October 8, 2010, the Department decided to strip the school of the nickname and logo. They called the mascot "unambiguously race-based."
After much controversy, Mukwonago High School returned to court a year later, and the claim of having to change the school's mascot due to it being "race-based" was announced unconstitutional. Mukwonago High School was permitted use of the Indian logo and mascot.
However, it was decided that Mukwonago High School would keep their mascot and logo after some time. They are still the Mukwonago Indians.
