Mqabba is a town in the south of Malta, situated in the heart of a soft limestone area. The surroundings of the village is barren and stripped with quarries. Mqabba has around a quarter of the quarries in Malta.
With around 3,700 residents, Mqabba has the characteristics of a typical Maltese village, with stillness prevailing in the small streets of the village. Mqabba was built around the Parish Church, the landmark of the village. The church is dedicated to the Assumption, with its feast being held every 15 August. The feast of Our Lady of Lilies (Madonna tal-Gilju) is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.
The two band clubs of the village are situated in the piazza. The village feasts are popular with the residents. Other feasts celebrated are the feast of the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Sorrows, Corpus Domini and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary.
Other landmarks in the village include chapels dedicated to the Lady of Sorrows, Saint Basil, Saint Michael, Saint Catherine and Saint John. Mqabba also has 139 cubic metres (4,909 cubic feet) of catacombs which were discovered in the 1860s.
The motto of the village is 'Non Nisi Per Ardua' which translates into 'Only with Ability'.
The importance of Mqabba is shown by the archaeological remains found in the vicinity. Extinct animals were found in quarries at "Ta` Kandja" and "Tax-Xantin". A sign that Neolithic people lived here was evident with the discovery of a cave found in a site known as "Bur Meghez". One of the most important discoveries in Mqabba is the Paleo Christian "Mintna Catacombs" found in Diamond Jubilee Square in 1860 by Dr. A. A. Caruana and Capt Strickland. The ritual table known as the "Agape" table dominates the whole structure of tombs. Archaeological details were studied by Mayr. Becker, Zammit and Bellanti.
Important structures include the Vincenti Tower.
The main church is dedicated to Assumption of Our Lady. The feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on the nearest Sunday to 8 December.
The titular statue found in the church, that of the Assumption of the blessed Mother of God, was made by Alessandro Farrugia in 1836 and was made similar to the statue of the Assumption which is found in Ghaxaq, made out of wood. The photograph shows the statue in its original form, as it was prior to 1928, when a new sarcophagus made of silver replaced the original wooden one seen in the picture. Apart from the sarcophagus, the statue itself has lost none of its characteristics.
The Assumption of Mary is celebrated on 15 August, and is also celebrated in Qrendi, Gudja, Ghaxaq, Mosta, Attard and Victoria (Gozo). It is all celebrated in the same day, as a tradition.
Fireworks displays
The parish feast which is organised between 8 and 15 August, brings to Mqabba fireworks enthusiasts as the St. Mary Fireworks Factory is a d renowned Fireworks group. The group won the first edition of the Malta International Fireworks Festival in 2006 and brought the most important honour in the villages history when it won the Caput Lucis Fireworks World Championships in 2007 in Valmontone a province of Rome in Italy after competing with seven of the world's most successful firework companies.
The secondary feast fireworks displays take place on the 3rd week of June of each year, the Feast in Honour of Our Lady of Lilies. Ground and Aerial Fireworks display are held on each day of the Feast. The main fireworks event is held on Saturday, eve of the Feast.

Band Clubs
- Society of St. Mary and King George V Band Club (Socjeta' Santa Marija u Banda Re Ġorġ V) - www.santamarija.com
The foundation of the society dates back to the 1910, with the establishment of the King George V Club. The aim of the club was to organize the feast of Saint Mary (traditionally known in Malta as Santa Marija) in Mqabba during August.
In 1939, the society introduced music when Giuseppe Galea, a musician member of the club, started giving music lessons. In 1945, soon after World War II, he founded the Orkestra Santa Marija. The first concert was held on 12 August 1945 and was directed by Mro. Espedito Deguara. On 20 October 1946, during a general meeting, the members of the club decided to shift from the concept of an orchestra to that of a band. In three months, the members of the Orchestra changed their orchestral instruments to band instruments so that on Sunday 29 March 1947, the King George V Band performed its first concert, directed by Mro. Joseph M. Barbara. The band hads had another four conductors namely: Mro. Leonard Spiteri (1951–1956), Mro. George Martin (1956–1991), Mro. Anthony Camilleri (1991–1997). Mro. David Aguis, the present Conductor, was appointed in March 1997.
Highlights from the history of the society include:
- The Proclamation of the Dogma of Our Lady Assumpta (1950);
- the 50th and 75th anniversary celebrations (1960 and 1985 respectively);
- the 50th anniversary from the ‘Convoy of Saint Mary’ (1942–1992);
- the 50th Anniversary from the foundation of the Orchestra and eventually the Band (1996 and 1997);
- the 400 years from the foundation of Mqabba Parish (1998);
- the award of the Etoile d'Or du Jumelage (1998);
- the 50th anniversary from the proclamation of the 'dogma'; and
- the winning of the First Malta International Fireworks Festival (2006).
- In 1996 the society began establishing contacts and exchange programs with bands around Europe. These relations led to a twinning programme with the band from Santa Vittoria in Matenano, Italy and a visit of the King George V band to Italy (1996). Bands from around Europe have visited Malta and Mqabba for the feast of Saint Mary.
In June 2007, the King George V band has visited Italy for the second time as guests during a Musical Festival known as La Festa del Socio. In August 2007, the Saint Mary Fireworks Factory was invited to participate in Caput Lucis, an International Fireworks Festival held in Rome, Italy where this factory classified in the first place and was crowned as Champions.
In April 2010 the Ground Fireworks Section within the St. Mary Fireworks Factory Mqabba won the IV Malta Mechanised Ground Fireworks Festival held at the granadies Floriana, winning the categories for Best Mechanism, Best Products and Originality as well as the Overall price.
*Our Lady of Lily Band Club - Lily Band (Is-Soċjetà Mużikali Madonna Tal-Ġilju - Banda Madonna tal-Gilju) www.talgilju.com The Lily Band Club of Mqabba was established in 1911, originally under the name of Circolo Pio X. The aim of this club was the organisation of the feast of Our Lady of the Lilies, held annually in Mqabba. The first President of the club was Mr Paul Caruana, a local businessman.
The Lily Band Club has developed into an organisation which has its own premises, a fireworks factory and an organisation set-up consisting of a Youth Section, a Women's Section, Pyrotechnic Section, Band Commission, Bandstand Commission, Sport’s Commission and the support of the Confratemity of the Immaculate Conception. The club organises single handedly the feast of Our Lady of the Lilies every June and the feast of the Immaculate Conception in December.
During the 1920s the club under the leadership of Mr Raymond Ellul moved to new premises at 15, Church Square, Mqabba. It was also during these years that Mr Baskal Xuereb began his work on the street decorations for the feast of Our Lady of the Lilies. The Second World War meant a severe set-back to both feast and club on 9 April 1942 as an aerial attack destroyed part of the parish church and several houses in the village. It also caused damage to the statue of Our Lady of the Lilies. The statue is the workmanship of Mr Giovanni Darmanin and was inaugurated on 21 May 1876.
On 9 December 1945, the Lily Band performed its first musical programme. Thus the band became the first band of the village. The founder and bandmaster was Mro Joseph Darmanin. Later on the Lily Band Club became a member of the Malta Band Clubs' Association.
Mqabba FC
The history of football in Mqabba goes back to 1915/1916 during World War I, when a team used to play in an area of the village known as “il-Mentna”. However, following the end of the War, the interest in football in Mqabba disappeared for a long while. It was in 1944 at the end of World War II when a new team was formed in the village by Maltese soldiers stationed nearby. This early team had to be content to play with other Armed Forces teams and teams from neighbouring villages in friendly matches on a pitch whose land is now taken over by the Luqa Airport runway.
Due to mass emigration following World War II, the team lost several key players and was struggling to stay afloat until 1950 when the Mqabba Ramblers team was set up, consisting mainly of players from the village itself. Some of the earliest members of the Mqabba Ramblers Football Club Committee included Carmelo Bugeja, Francis Saliba and the President at the time, Anthony Zammit. Some of the first players in the early Ramblers line-up were Leonard Farrugia, Gerald Farrugia, Vincent Bugeja, Carmelo Fenech, Joe Sultana, Emmanuel Brincat, Tommy Attard, Paul Zammit and Tony Ellul, a local goalkeeper for whom lot of interest had been shown by other clubs.
During the season 1956/57, the team entered the Malta Amateur Football Association (MAFA). Following this, many players of a high calibre were acquired by the club, including the fullback Suda from Melita, the fullback A. Fitzgerald of Sliema, the Forward Billy Dalli of Floriana, and the fullback Armeni of Hamrun Spartans, amongst others. With this high class of players, the Mqabba Ramblers were a serious challenge for the top spot in the MAFA league that season, only to lose out to Gharghur Juventus in the final match.
In 1957 another football club under the name of Mqabba Hajduks was set up. This name was proposed by the President Gulio Farrugia and seconded by Joseph Farrugia during the new team’s first General Annual Meeting in June 1957. For the next three years there was fierce rivalry between these two clubs in Mqabba, particularly when they competed head-to-head in the Inter Amateur Soccer Competition.
To some, the rivalry within the same village seemed unproductive for either club, hence the proposal for both clubs to be united into one team was put forward by the Mqabba Hayduks secretary of the time, Richard Spiteri; in a meeting on the 12th February 1961 with the Mqabba Ramblers secretary Joseph Ellul. This proposal was accepted and the two team were united under the name Mqabba Hayduks FC for the 1960/61 season in the MAFA second division.
The following year the first Mqabba Hajduks Minors team entered the M.F.A. and were set to win their section had it not been for the protests of Vittoriosa Stars, who made claims the Mqabba Minors fielded an ineligible player.
For several years between 1955 and 1962, Mqabba Hajduks applied to become part of the Malta Football Association. For unknown reasons, this application was turned down each time until finally, in the 1962/1963 season, the M.F.A. finally accepted their application; following in the fottsteps of other small village football clubs such as Dingli Swallows, Qrendi, Kirkop and Ghaxaq.
The first year in the M.F.A. League was quite a success with several wins over teams like Senglea, Balzan Youths and St. Venera. This achievement was in no small part due to the dedication of Mr. Richard Spiteri who was responsible for putting together a first class team. Others who had aided the Mqabba Hajduks side to the best of their ability at the time included Alfred Spiteri, Louis Farrugia, J.M. Borg, Joe Gauci, Reno Farrugia, Leonard Farrugia, Gerlad Farrugia, Harry Gallan, Angelo Briffa and Daniel Briffa.
Due to serious financial difficulties, the Hajduks committee had to take the drastic decision to disband the Minors team. Instead, the committee helped to set up a boy’s team at the local primary school. This team did well in the Inter Schools League, finishing First Runners Up.
In 1969, the Hajduks found themselves out of the M.F.A., and had to be contented playing in friendly matches and as a guest in the Amateur Cup of that year as organized by the M.A.F.A. The Mqabba Hajduks were not allowed to re-enter the M.F.A. Third Division until the 1972/73 season; and an at this point a new committee was also formed. The coach at the time was Paul Farrugia, whose spirit and dedication inspired the players to work hard. The following season (1973/74), the Hajduks finished the season in fifth place with a total of 16 points in the league table.
The 1975/76 season was a great year for both the Hajduks and the Minors. The Minors team, under the guidance of Paul Farrugia as coach, won the Minors league with maximum points. The Hajduks finished the Third Division league in second place, only a point behind champions of that season Luqa F.C. The 1977/78 season saw the arrival of a new coach, Alfred Lapira, as well as several new players. For the first time in the history of the club, the Mqabba Hajduks were promoted to Second Division that season.
Unfortunately the following season, the club once more slipped back down into the Third Division. The team did not fare much better in this season either, with the exception of reaching the final of the knock-out competition that year. In 1980/81, the committee appointed Jimmy Briffa as the new player/coach. The Hajduks fared a little better and finished this season mid-table and once again reached the Knock-Out finals.
In the 1981/82 season, with Jimmy Briffa still on as player/coach, the Mqabba Hajduks found themselves finishing the season near the top of the table tied with Pieta Hotspurs. The decider match went in favour of the stronger Hajduks side, who won 2-0, confirming promotion back into the Second Division; in spite of losing the following Championship Decider with Tarxien Rainbows 1-0.
In the 1982/83 season, Mqabba Hajduks ended the season in third place with only 1 point between themselves and the promoted teams. In 1983/84, for the first time in the club’s history, the side was promoted into First Division as Champions, with a stunning record of 26 games with no losses that season and a total of 37 goals.
In the year 2000, the Mqabba FC Youth Nursery was founded by Mark Bondin after various attempts by Joe Bugeja. 13 years later, Mark Bondin is still the Headcoach of the nursery with Jimmy Briffa appointed as Technical Director. In the 2010/2011 season, Mqabba FC appointed Clive Mizzi from Zurrieq as the new Coach and his assistant Renzo Kerr-Cumbo. Mqabba FC ended the season as runners up which meant that Mqabba FC was promoted for the fifth time to the Premier Division. During the season 2011/2012 under the guidance of Coach Clive Mizzi and Renzo Kerr-Cumbo, Mqabba FC ended the first two rounds with 20 points. This result enabled Mqabba FC to play in the Relegation Pool after points were divided in two. Mabba FC had a great season with 9 wins and 7 draws from a total of 32 matches ending the season with 24 points. However this was not enough for Mqabba FC and eventually were relegated to First Division. Hamrun Spartans managed to survive the relegation with 25 points, one more than Mqabba FC.
For the season 2011/2012 Mqabba FC new coach was ex-Mqabba FC player, Albert Busuttil. This was the most negative season for Mqabba FC winning only one match and obtaining five draws. Hence Mqabba FC were relegated to Second Division.
New coaching staff was appointed on the 25th June 2013 with Coach Mark Bondin, UEFA A qualified and his assistant Nicholas Baldacchino, UEFA B qualified. Mr Charles Farrugia was appointed as the new President for Mqabba FC after the resignation of Mario Borg following 14 years in this role.
On Tuesday 24 September 2012, Leslie Burke was appointed as the new Coach for Mqabba FC.

Mqabba Albions AFC
In 1997 Richard Spiteri, Pierre Micallef and Arthur Pisani set up Mqabba Albions Amateur Football Club. The club was affiliated to the Malta Amateur Football Association and participated in the league organised by the same association for ten consecutive years. The club's greatest achievement during these ten years was the promotion to the First Division in 2004/05. For the season 2008/09 the club joined the Swan Football League, and in 2009/10 joined the Inter Amateur Soccer Competition.
The home colour of Mqabba Albions is red, being the same colours depicted on the emblem representing Mqabba. The away colours are orange and black
Mqabba FC Youth Nursery
The first attempts to establish the Mqabba F.C. Youth Nursery date back to 1993, when the never forgotten Mr Joe Bugeja (known as id-Demsey), gathered children from the village and gave them the opportunity to acquire basic football training. For some reason or another, the Nursery soon came to an end.
In the year 2000 Mr Joe Farrugia shared his thoughts with Mr. Mark Bondin about establishing a football nursery. A group of 20 trainees all aged under 12 attended training with Mr Bondin, who is the current Nursery’s Head Coach. This season coincided with the promotion of the Mqabba F.C. senior team to the 1st Dvision.
The following season (2001/2002), the number of children doubled and the U/10 section was introduced, with training being held twice a week. The U/12’s had an impressive year, having good runs in YFA Tournaments and finishing Runners Up in another two tournaments organized at Zebbug and Zurrieq.
The 2002/2003 saw the Nursery growing considerably with the increase of both, children and coaches. The trainees attending for regular training rose up to 70. The coaches were Omar Caruana and Joe Borg (U/8), Alan Friggieri (U/10), Paul Calleja (U/12) and Mark Bondin U/14), under voluntary basis. Tracksuits and kits were also introduced for training sessions and matches. During the following year 2003/2004), the situation remained practically the same, with a slight rise in trainees. However, during this season, the Nursery started investing in the coaching staff with coaches beginning to attend courses organized by MFA, so as to have better quality training.
A new 5-a-side synthetic football ground adjacent to the renovated sandy pitch enabled the Nursery to improve the quality of the training. Apart from these, new premises were erected for the Nursery to have its own facilities. During this season, the squads were divided in U/6, U/8, U/10, U/12, U/14, U/16 and U/19. The number of trainees attending training rose to 160 with 15 coaches organizing 16 training sessions per week. Training sessions were coordinated by two Head Coaches with UEFA “B” License, Mr. Mark Bondin and Mag. Darren Micallef.
The 2008-2009 season saw the installation of synthetic turf on the Nurseries main ground together with the building of adjacent dressing rooms, equipment room and an administration office. These added and renovated facilities gave more opportunities for better improvement of both the technical and personal aspects of the trainees. For the 2009-2010 seasons, given that the facilities were in place, the Nursery invested in experienced and qualified coaching team with the aim to improve on the continuous personal development of the trainees.
In 2010, Mqabba FC Youth Nursery has celebrated its 10th Anniversary. The logo chosen for this celebration was "FOR THE GOOD OF THE YOUNG". Several activities were organized with the main event being a reception organized at the nursery premises in the presence of Onor. Clyde Puli, Parliamentary Secretary for Youths and Sports. As from 2011-2012 season Mr Jimmy Briffa, ex-Maltese national player, was appointed as Technical Director. This was an important season when Mqabba FC Youth Nursery signed a new sponsorship contract with Eurosport and changed its kits’ brand from Legea to Adidas.
Since the foundation of Mqabba FC Youth Nursery, both Brandon Debono and Omar Farrugia made their debut and are still regularly selected as part of the parent team. Brandon Debono, from the Under 17 team made his debut with Mqabba FC on the 3rd May 2010 in the match against Balzan Youths which match was won by Mqabba FC 1-0. Brandon made his debut at the age of 15 years. Omar Farrugia, another player within the Under 17 who made his debut with parent team Mqabba FC on Sunday 1 May 2011 against Dingli. Omar was instrumental for the third goal scored by Jean Paul Muscat from penalty in a game which Mqabba won 3-1. Omar was also selected to join the U17 Malta National Team and made his debut for Malta on Monday 24 October 2011 during the UEFA U17 Championship against the team of Montenegro. During the season 2012/2013 we saw the debut of more players. On Sunday 14 April 2013, it was the time for our Under 19 regular player Kurt Falzon. Kurt made his debut with Mqabba FC at the age of 17 years in the match against Naxxar which match ended 3-0 for Naxxar. On Saturday 20 April 2013, Ryan Vella (17 years) from the Under 17 squad and Adrian Abdilla (18 years) from our Under 19 team made their debut for Mqabba FC against Gudja United during the pre-last First Division League match held at Luxol Ground. Match ended 4-1 for Gudja. It is to note also that during this match Mqabba FC had five players from the Nursery on the pitch with Curtis Callus, Under 17 goalkeeper selected on the bench. During the last First Division league match against B'Bugia held on Saturday 27 April 2013 at the Centenary Stadium, Curtis Callus made his debut on the 82 minute at the age of 15 years. Match ended 5-1 for B'Bugia. Moreover both Ryan Vella and Curtis Callus were regularly selected for trials with the U17 National team.
The main objective of our Nursery is to contribute to the continuous personal development of children from Mqabba and villages in the vicinities by luring them to the beautiful game of Football, for the ultimate benefit of the community.
The accomplishment of this objective is testified by the ever increasing number of trainees attending training sessions. The positive contribution of the Nursery was also acknowledged by the Mqabba Local Council when in 2009 Mr. Mark Bondin, the Nursery founder and current Head Coach, was awarded with the Gieh L-Imqabba award in appreciation for his continuous contribution to the Nursery and the community of Mqabba.
Mqabba FC Youth Nursery is looking forward for innovative ways in which it can continue with its positive contribution. In fact, as from the 2009–2010 season, apart from the technical and administrative aspect in the Nursery's operations, the nursery committee has set up a Parents’ and Community sub-committee in order to encourage more parents participation in the Nursery.
The Nursery believes that parent’s involvement is crucial for the Nursery to continue pursuing its mission and the Nursery acknowledges the obligations that it has towards the community it forms part of. This sub-committee is responsible for the organization of activities which are earmarked to enhance the Nursery's presence in the community. This sub-committee widens the operational structure of the nursery which structure now caters for three aspects, that is Technical, Administration and Community.
