Mowden Hall School is a coeducational day and boarding preparatory school in Stocksfield, Northumberland, England approximately 18 miles (29 km) west of Newcastle upon Tyne.[1] It has been part of the Cothill Educational Trust since 2007
History
Mowden Hall takes its name from the actual building the school was founded in. The school was founded by Frank Marchbank in 1935 at Mowden Hall in Darlington, County Durham as a traditional boys-only boarding preparatory school. During World War II, in 1940, it evacuated to Windermere, Cumbria due to Darlington's status as an industrial centre which would have made it a likely target for the Luftwaffe. It moved to its current location after the war ended. In 1982 it became fully coeducational with the admission of girls.[2]
Mowden Hall
The building was built around the 1880s in a neo-Tudor style. It became a Grade II listed building in 1977.[3] The building's current tenant is the Teachers' Pensions authority.
Pastoral Care
The school is a walking distance away from the local parish church St James' Church. Boarders attend weekly worship services are held there.[4] Some other events such as the annual Christmas concert are held at Hexham Abbey.
Boarding
Full and weekly boarding are available to pupils in the main prep school (aged 8 and above). They are looked after by residential staff including a Head Matron and her assistants who live on campus.[5]
Former pupils
- Alexander Armstrong, actor/comedian[6]
