Moushumi Chatterjee (26 April 1948; Bengali: মৌসুমি চ্যাটার্জী; Moushumi Chāţārjī) is a Bollywood actress, who has also acted in Bengali cinema. She worked with actors like Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Jeetendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Vinod Mehra and Amitabh Bachchan. She was 3rd highest paid Hindi actress in the period 1973-1984.

Personal life and education

Moushumi Chatterjee was born in Calcutta. Her father Prantosh Chattopadhyaya was in the Army. She had a sister and a brother.[1] Her grandfather was a judge. She is married to Jayant Mukherjee (son of Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhyay). They have two daughters, Payal and Megha.[2] She started to act in Bollywood movies after her marriage, which was quite unusual for women during that time.

Career

Career as lead heroine (1967–1984)

She made her film debut in the Bengali hit, Balika Badhu (1967) directed by Tarun Majumdar. Her debut as heroine in the Hindi film Anuraag (1972) was directed by Bengali director, Shakti Samanta which became a blockbuster. She played a blind girl who falls in love, and her performance earned her a Filmfare nomination as Best Actress. The film won the Filmfare Award as Best Picture. After Anuraag, she was part of hits like Naina opposite Shashi Kapoor, Kuchhe Dhaage with Vinod Khanna, Us Paar with Vinod Mehra after which she decided to do more Hindi films until 981. She acted with the then struggling Amitabh Bachchan in the thriller Benaam (1974) and then opposite Rajesh Khanna in suspense drama Humshakal but both the films were failures in 1974. Her most successful film came in the end of 1974, where she played a rape survivor in Manoj Kumar's Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974).[3] Her rape sequence in the film is still considered one of the most disturbing scenes in Hindi cinema. Her performance earned her a Filmfare Nomination as Best Supporting Actress. In 1974, her only hits were musical romantic love story Us Paar with Vinod Mehra, Farebi with Vinod Khanna and followed by Roti Kapada Aur Makaan.

She was constantly paired romantically opposite actor Vinod Mehra in 10 films though they worked together in 13 films. The successful films of the pair Vinod Mehra-Moushmi Chaterjee include Anuraag, Us-Paar, Raftaar, Umar Qaid, Mazaaq (1975), Zindagi (1976), Jyoti Bane Jwala (1980). Her other films from 1977-1979 include Hatyara, Bhola Bhala, Phandebaaz, Dil Aur Deewaar, Swarg Narak, Do Ladke Dono Kadke. She did Basu Chatterjee's film Manzil (1979)which was critically acclaimed but a box office flop. Her film with Uttam Kumar - Ogu Bodhu Sundari was released in 1981. In 1982, she did Marathi film-Cameo Role for Song Tumhi Adkitta Mi Ho Supari from the film Bhannat Bhanu. Other than Vinod Mehra, her on-screen pair opposite heroes Shashi Kapoor,Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar. Her films with Rajesh Khanna included Bhola Bhala, Prem Bandhan, Ghar Parivaar. She did Naina, Anari, Gautam Govinda, Swayamvar, Ghar Ek Mandir. Her films with Jeetendra were Swarg Narak, Tumhari Kasam, Dil Aur Deewar, Jyoti Bane Jwala, Pyaasa Sawan, Justice Chaudhury, Maang Bharo Sajana, Santan. Her works with Sanjeev Kumar as a pair include Daasi (1981), Itnisi Baat (1981), Angoor (1982). She stopped getting main female lead roles after 1985 regularly.

Career as supporting actress (1985-present)

From 1985 to 1991, she got more offers as character actress and she made the transition thus to character roles of mother and bhabhi (sister-in-law) often pairing with Dharmendra or Raj Babbar or Sunil Dutt. Occasionally, she got main lead roles in films in the 1990s with Ghar Parivaar and Aa Ab Laut Chalen with Rajesh Khanna, then Santaan, Prateeksha (1993), Udhaar Ki Zindagi with Jeetendra. Some of her films as supporting actress since 1995 include Keemat: They Are Back (1998), Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999), Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, Hum Kaun Hai? (2004).

Bengali film career

Her Bengali films as the lead heroine include Balika Badhu (1969), Parineeta (1969), Anindita (1972), Anand Ashram(1977), Ogu Bodhu Sundari (1981), Prarthana (1984), Shatarupa (1989), Kari Diye Kinlam (1989) and later as supporting actress were Nater Guru (2003), Bhalobasar Anek Naam (2005), Golapi Ekhon Bilatey (2006), The Japanese Wife (2010) and Goynar Baksho (2013).

Personal life

She married producer Jayanta Mukherjee, son of music composer and singer Hemant Kumar. They have two daughters, Payal and Megha. She acted in Hindi films after marriage.

Moushumi accepted a dual role in Tanuja Chandra's Zindaggi Rocks (2006) and crossed over to Canada to act in Bollywood/Hollywood (2003). She entered politics in 2004.
