The Reverend styles

The Most Reverend is a style applied to certain religious figures. It is a variant of the more common style The Reverend.

  • In the Anglican Communion, primates and archbishops (as metropolitan bishops of ecclesiastical provinces) are given the style (the Bishop of Meath and Kildare is also given this style for historical reasons). In some provinces (notably the Church of England), retired archbishops usually revert to being styled "The Right Reverend".[1][2]
  • In the Catholic Church (outside Great Britain and some Commonwealth countries), all bishops are styled "The Most Reverend", as well as monsignors of the rank of protonotary apostolic de numero.
  • In the Catholic Church (inside Great Britain and some Commonwealth countries), archbishops are styled "The Most Reverend", with other bishops being styled "The Right Reverend".[3]
  • In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, archbishops and metropolitans are styled "The Most Reverend" provided that they are not the primates of autocephalous churches.[3]
  • In the Church of God in Christ, the title "Most Reverend" is sometimes used to refer to the Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ.[4]
