Mongolian Wikipedia (Mongolian: Монгол Википедиа) - Wikipedia in Mongolian, a free and publicly editable online encyclopedia. Was created 28 February 2004. As of 13 May 2012 the Mongolian Wikipedia contains 7599 articles. The number of active participants is small, about 104 people (August 2011), while the number of registered users is 17,763 people.

Growth, coverage and popularity

The growth of the Mongolian Wikipedia has been quite intense:

  • 17 November 2011 - 6900 articles
  • 29 May 2012 - 7593 articles
  • 29 May 2012 - 273,497 edits[2]

Following the rise of the Mongolian Wikipedia suggests that the number of articles in it will soon exceed 10,000 (at the moment there are almost 9 000).[3]

Language and dialects

Separate Wikipedias have been created for several Mongolian dialects, including Buryat (bxr:) and Kalmyk (xal:).

  1. There is some controversy over who founded Wikipedia. Wikipedia's official personnel page from September 2001 states Wales and Sanger were the two co-founders, and that there was no editor-in-chief. Wales considers himself to be the sole founder of Wikipedia and has told the Boston Globe that "it's preposterous" to call Sanger the co-founder. However, Sanger strongly contests that description. He was identified as a co-founder of Wikipedia at least as early as September 2001 and referred to himself that way as early as January 2002.
