The Monarchy of Mauritius (the Mauritian monarchy) was the system of government in which a hereditary monarch was the sovereign of the Mauritius from 1968 to 1992. Mauritius shared the Sovereign with the other Commonwealth realms. The monarch's constitutional roles were mostly delegated to the Governor-General of Mauritius. The royal succession was governed by the English Act of Settlement of 1701.
The monarchy was abolished in 1992, when Mauritius became a republic within the Commonwealth. To date, this is the most recent Commonwealth realm to become a republic.
History
The Monarch of Mauritius was created by the Mauritius Independence Act 1968 which transformed the British Crown Colony of Mauritius into the independent sovereign constitutional monarchy of Mauritius. Mauritius adopted a new constitution in 1992 which abolished the monarchy.
