Dato' Sri Mohd Zin Mohamed is a Malaysian politician. He is a member of the United Malay National Organisation (UMNO) party in the ruling Barisan Nasional government.

Mohd Zin was defeated as the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Sepang constituency in Selangor in the 13th Malaysian General Election on May 5th, 2013, by YB Hanipa Maidin of Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party. It was the first time since 1969 that Barisan Nasional has failed to hold the seat of Sepang.


Early life

Mohd Zin was born in Muar, Johore. Mohd Zin is married to Datin Azlina Ahmad. He has five children Ir. Irwan Ariff, Shahree, Zubir, Shafiq and Aisyah Ilani. Has two grandsons Muhamad Asyraff Ariff and Muahamad Gabriel Ariff.

Education

He obtained his Diploma of Civil Engineering from UiTM in 1977. He then went on to work with PKNS before continuing his study in Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois, USA. In 1980 he furthered his study in the same university to obtain his master's degree.

Politics

He then became the Head of Section 8 Shah Alam UMNO Division (1986-1993) and later become the youth chief of UMNO Shah Alam in 1989-1994. He was then later appointed as the Treasurer for Selangor UMNO Youth and also UMNO Youth National Exco.

Mohd. Zin was once the secretary for the committee of "UMNO against slander" campaign. In 2001 he was elected as the Deputy Chief for UMNO Shah Alam. In 2003 he was elected as the Chief Sponsor for UMNO Kota Raja and later UMNO Sepang.

General election

In the 2008 General Election, Mohd Zin Mohammed contested for the Parliament of Sepang and won. He won by 4,849 votes.

In the 2013 General Election, Mohd Zin Mohammed contested for the Parliament of Sepang and was defeated. He lost by 1,142 votes.

Cabinet minister

Mohd Zin became the Minister for Works after the 2008 election, replacing Samy Vellu.[1] However, in April 2009, Mohd Zin was dropped from the Cabinet by incoming Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.[2] He had earlier served as Deputy Minister for Works.[3] He was then replaced by Shaziman Abu Mansor.

Chairman of Keretapi Tanah Melayu

In November 2009, Mohd Zin was appointed as the Chairman of Keretapi Tanah Melayu, peninsular Malaysia's main rail operator.[4]

Mohd Zin is a qualified engineer and has served as a director of multiple Malaysian companies.[4]
