Mohanty

Mohanty or mahant is the name used by Hindu twice-born upper caste people called as karana(Or brahmin) in the north-east part of odisha . When mahants migrated to Utkala Kingdom during the time of King Utkala(son of Solar Dynasty King Sudyumna) some mahants (head of a temple) started doing the job of kayathas in Utkala Kingdom and named mohanty (from Sanskrit mahat "the great"). They were used to be the head of temples during the time of Suryavansha kings. Originated from Indo Aryan kingdom called Kosala (capital Ayodhya)now in Uttar Pradesh, India. The Mohanty are Hindus and are Sun worshipers. Now, Odisha is home to some of the oldest Sun temples in India, including Konark.

History

Huen Tsang also wrote about massive Yajnas and the holy smoke coming from villages nearby Vaitarani River, when he visited the monasteries in Kalinga. Following the 8th century many Brahmins Dikshit (Dixit), Mishra, Chaturvedi, Tripathy, Dwivedi, Trivedi, Upadhyaya, Sharma, along with some Mahant now Mohanty. (belonging to Kashyapa and Goutama: gotra) from Hastigrama, Takari of Magadha and upper Gangetic plain also migrated to coastal districts. Finally the Eastern Ganga dynasty brought more number of Brahmins from all over North India. As Orissa or then Utkala grew to an effluent kingdom, many Brahmins migrated to Orissa during the late 11th century. A king named Sudyumna (king of the Solar Dynasty in Indian mythology) was born of King Ila in Ikshvaku dynasty; Sudyumna - King of Solar Dynasty had three sons who founded independent kingdoms: one son Utkala founded the state Utkala with capital at Puri, another son Gaya founded Gayā in Bihar and third son Haritāśca went to south. The King Utkala Deva invited Brahmins from Indo-Gangetic Plain and settled them in his kingdom. Sudyumna was a suryavanshi king of Kosala which was one of the Mahajanapada of ancient Aryans.
