The Moçâmedes Railway is a 907 km railway line in Angola, between Namibe (which was called Moçâmedes until 1985) and Menongue in Cuando Cubango province. The line is operated by the company Caminhos de Ferro de Moçâmedes E.P..

(Portuguese: Linha de Moçâmedes) (later the "Namibe Railway") (Portuguese: Caminho-de-ferro do Namibe).[1]

History

The railway was originally built in the colonial era, 1905, with a 600mm gauge, and was 249 km in length.[2]

In 1950 the line was re-gauged to Cape gauge (1067mm).[3] severely damaged by years of civil war in Angola, but rehabilitation began in 2006 with support from China.[4] As of March 2009, 89 km had been restored, between Matala and Dongo.

Restoration

In November 2010, it was announced that the reconstruction was being managed by RITES, and that it would have 56 stations.[5] 15 new locomotives were bought from CNR Dalian. Rebuilding of the line was completed in July 2012.[6]

The railway is expected to serve mines at Chamutete and Cassinga[7]
