Mnet (acronym of Music Network) is a music television channel in South Korea owned by CJ Group.

The CJ E&M Center Studio located in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul is the broadcast and recording center of many Mnet programs with a studio audience, namely the live weekly music show M! Countdown.[1]

The global website named for Mnet Global will change to MWave starting in April 2013. Other sites from Mnet are not affected with the change.[2]

History

  • 1993: Music Network established
  • 1994: Contract made with MTV to broadcast the latter's programmes in South Korea
  • 1995: Music-centralized cable show 'Mnet' launched
  • 1996: 24-hour broadcasting made available
  • 1997: acquired by the Cheil Jedang Group
  • 1998: first music channel to start online broadcasting
  • 2001: contract with MTV terminated; Mnet programmes broadcasting 24-hours
  • 2004: Programme ‘M! Countdown’ made its debut
  • 2005: Mnet online music website established
  • 2006: Mnet Japan established
  • 2010: ‘Super Star K Season 2’ writes the record of The Most View Rated Cable Programme
  • 2013: First TV Drama Aired (Monstar)
  • 2014: Add in China JiangSu Cable NanJing Number TV Channel 212/412,and All the Cable TV;Spring TV Channel 772,ST2 TV Channel 411 and Sancai International TV Channel 713-SD,839 HD, Starhub TV Channel 170 [HD], Part of Starhub Malay's Impian Pack and SingTel Mio TV Channel 698 [HD] respectively to commence broadcasting services starting January 2014 in Singapore alongside Malaysia's Astro Ria replacing Indonesia's MNC Business, Astro Prima replacing MNC International on December 7, 2013.
