History
The line opened on 16 January 1889[1] as the Mito Railway, a private railway company operating between Oyama and Mito Stations. On 1 March 1892, the Mito Railway was annexed by the Nippon Railway.
On 1 July 1895, Tomobe Station opened forming a connection between the Joban Line and former Mito Railway line.
On 12 October 1909, the Japanese Government Railways renamed the line the "Mito Line" for the section between Oyama and Tomobe, with Tomobe to Mito forming part of the Joban Line.
The line was completely electrified in 1 February 1967.
