Mithapukur (Bengali: মিঠাপুকুর) is an Upazila of Rangpur District[1] in the Division of Rangpur, Bangladesh. The upazila is situated in the middle of Rangpur, where it is bounded by Rangpur Sadar in the North, to the south Pirgonj, to the west badargonj & Fulbari, Dinajpur, to the east Pirgacha & Sundorgonj, Gaibandha.
Geography
Mithapukur is located at 25°32′30″N 89°17′00″E / 25.5417°N 89.2833°E. It has 82563 units of household and total area 515.62 km². Mithapukur possesses vast fertile land. The Jamunashori, Akhira and Ghagot are the major river flows through Mithapukur.
Demographics
As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Mithapukur has a population of 409915. Males constitute 51.09% of the population, and females 48.91%. This Upazila's eighteen-up population is 207035. Mithapukur has an average literacy rate of 23% (7+ years) compared to the national average of 32.4% literate.[2]
Mithapukur Upazila has a very diverse population with minority groups including Buddhists, Christians and tribes such as Sawthal who have lived in Mithapukur from the beginning of settlement in this area.[citation needed]

Tourist attractions
Mithapukur is an largest Upazila in North Bengal. Mithapukur Upazila has many historical and attractive places. Pairaband is the birthplace of Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain (1880–1932), an eminent educationist and a pioneer of women's liberation. Mithapukur's most popular tourist attractions are the Mithapukur Pond-Mithapukur,Benubon Bihar-Mithapukur,The Mughal era Masque- Mithapukur,Tanka Mosque-Latibpur and Gopalpur forest.

Road communication
One can travel from Dhaka to Mithapukur by bus. Luxury buses that go to Rangpur start from Kalyanpur in Dhaka. One should board a Rangpur-bound bus and get dropped at Mithapukur bus stop. The journey takes about six hours. Mithapukur is about 75 kilometer north from Bogra. It is on the highway N5 from Bogra to Rangpur (the distance from Bogra to Rangpur is about 100 kilometers). The road condition is very good.
