Misao Okawa (大川 ミサヲ Ōkawa Misao, sometimes romanized as Misawo Okawa; born 5 March 1898) is a Japanese supercentenarian who is, at the age of 115 years, 343 days, the world's oldest living person, holding the title since the death of 116-year-old Japanese man Jiroemon Kimura on June 12, 2013.[2]
She has been the world's oldest living woman since the death of 115-year-old Japanese woman Koto Okubo on January 12, 2013.[3] She is the third oldest verified Japanese person ever (behind Jiroemon Kimura and Tane Ikai), the 30th verified person to reach the age of 115, and the 10th oldest verified person ever.
Biography
Okawa was born on March 5, 1898, in the Tenma district (present-day Kita-ku) of Osaka, and now lives at a nursing home in Higashisumiyoshi-ku, Osaka.[4]
She married Yukio Okawa in 1919, and had three children, two daughters and one son, of whom, as of February 2013, her son and one daughter are still alive, both over the age of 90.[4] She has four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.[4][5] Her husband died on June 20, 1931.[6]
On February 27, 2013, a few days before her 115th birthday, Misao Okawa was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest living woman in the world, and was presented with a certificate at her nursing home in Osaka.[5]
