History
The history of Jiul Petroşani goes back to 1919, when the club was founded as Clubul Atletic al Minerilor din Petroşani (Athletic Club of Petroşani Miners).

Most of its history it played in the Liga I and the Liga II. In played in the Liga I for 41 seasons, being ranked 14th in the all time table.
Jiul Petroşani won the Romania Cup in 1974 and was runner-up in 1972. In 1979, Jiul was a runner-up in the Balkans Cup.
