Mineralnye Vody (Russian: Минеральные Воды, IPA: [mʲɪnʲɪˈralʲnɨjə ˈvodɨ]; lit. mineral waters) is a town in Stavropol Krai, Russia, located along the Kuma River and the main rail line between Rostov-on-Don and Baku (Azerbaijan). Population: 76,728 (2010 Census);[4] 75,644 (2002 Census);[8] 70,961 (1989 Census).[9] The town serves as a gateway to Caucasian Mineral Waters. It has an airport connecting the town with some other major Russian destinations as well as some international destinations.

History

The city owes its birth to the construction of the Rostov-Vladikavkaz Railway. Construction was completed in 1875. Junction with a branch to Kislovodsk was named "Sultanovsky" because they are on lands owned by the former Crimean Giray Sultan. While in the wayside (territory owned joint stock company railroad, limited concrete wall), lived about 500 workers serving local locomotive depot, station and other railway undertakings. And next, in the lands of the Sultan Dzhanbek Giray, with the consent of the new settlers soon settled. They were mostly artisans and craftsmen and traders, supplies and goods railroad. Settlers petitioned the authorities on education village. In 1878, the village received a legal status and the name "Sultanovsky".

In 1929-1930, there were mining and processing of non-metallic materials - stone-crushing plant "Snake" and mine "Beshtaunit". After the construction of the airport in 1925, the city became an important item on the main thoroughfares of the USSR air. In 1924 the Decree of the Central Executive Committee was formed Mineralovodsky area.


Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Mineralnye Vody serves as the administrative center of Mineralovodsky District, even though it is not a part of it.[1] As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as the town of krai significance of Mineralnye Vody—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1] As a municipal division, the town of krai significance of Mineralnye Vody is incorporated within Mineralovodsky Municipal District as Mineralnye Vody Urban Settlement.[2]

Mineralnye Vody's climate can be classified either as humid continental or humid subtropical (Köppen climate classification Dfa/Cfa).
