Miley: The Movement is a 2013 documentary television film of American recording artist and entertainer Miley Cyrus, following her return to the music industry in the lead-up to her fourth studio album Bangerz (2013). It premiered on October 2, 2013, on MTV. Its broadcast came six days before the release of her record, for which the documentary served as a promotional tool.

Miley: The Movement received generally mixed reviews from critics, who appreciated Cyrus' seemingly genuine commentary, but were disappointed by its failure to fully discuss her recent controversies. The documentary was viewed by nearly 1.6 million people in the US, earning a 0.8 rating in the Adult 18-49 demographic.[1]

Background

MTV first announced the documentary in July 2013, stating that it would "[follow] Cyrus as she works on the album and delves deep into the transformation she has experienced over the past few years."[2] Its title was announced on September 10, with a broadcast date confirmed for October 2. Its premiere came six days before the release of Cyrus' fourth studio album Bangerz, for which the documentary served as a promotional tool.[3] An official trailer was released by MTV on September 18.[4]

Critical reception

Writing for The Huffington Post, Kia Makarechi was critical of the exclusion of material including Cyrus' former fiancé Liam Hemsworth and the criticism surrounding her controversial performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, and felt that an appearance from Britney Spears was among the only "redeeming moments".[5] Newsday's Glenn Gamboa gave a positive review, appreciating that Cyrus "surprises with her words, not her twerks."[6] Elysa Gardner of USA Today opined that Cyrus appeared "good-humored and grateful to her fans" throughout the documentary, but questioned if her evolving image and public persona would become "yet another cautionary tale."[7]
