Mildred C. Crump is an American Democratic Party politician and community activist who has been a Member-At-Large of the Municipal Council of Newark, New Jersey since 2006.[1] In 1994, when elected to her first term, Crump became the first African-American woman elected to the municipal council. She is the first woman to be named council president, originally holding the position from 2006 to 2010. In November 2013, she again became the council's president.[2]
Background
Crump was born in Detroit, Michigan and is a graduate of Wayne State University, She has worked as a braille teacher both in Michigan and New Jersey. She received her Master in Public Administration at Rutgers-Newark.[1]
Council Member
Crump became the first African-American woman elected to the municipal council. In her first term, she held the seat from 1994 to 1998. At the time of her election she was only one of seven women ever elected to the council.[3]
Her second term began in 2006 when she became the first woman to be named council president, originally holding the position until 2010. In November 2013, she was again chosen by colleagues on the council as president.[2]
