He won an All Ireland Under 21 title with Tipperary in 1989 playing at full back as Tipperary defeated Offaly in the final.[1] He made his senior championship debut in 1991 coming on as a sub against Limerick in the Munster semi final. He was again introduced as a sub in the drawn Munster final against Cork and managed to secure a corner back spot for the remainder of the year as Tipperary claimed the Munster and All Ireland titles. They defeated Kilkenny in the All Ireland final.[2]

Tipperary claimed another Munster title in 1993 but were defeated in the All Ireland semi final against Galway. Michael remained a regular in the full back line for the next number of years winning 2 National Hurling League titles in 1994 and 1999. Tipperary reached another All Ireland final in 1997 but were defeated by Clare. Michael played his final championship game for Tipperary in the 2000 All Ireland quarter final defeat to Galway.[3]
He also claimed 2 Interprovincial hurling medals with Munster in 1995 and 1997.[4]
