Mia Martina (born Martine Johnson; January 14, 1984) is a Canadian artist signed to CP Records.
Biography
Martina grew up in Saint-Ignace, New Brunswick, Canada. Her father has French roots. She speaks fluent French and English. At age 18, she moved to Ottawa, Ontario to go to Carleton University.[1] While at university, she saw an ad for an intern position at a local label, CP Records.[1] After a year of hard work, Martina went from delivering CDs to radio stations and office administration work to singing backup in the studio for other recording artists on the label.
Musical career
Martina's first single release was a cover version of Edward Maya and Vika Jigulina's "Stereo Love". It reached number 10 in the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 in November 2010.[2] To date, "Stereo Love" has reached platinum sales and earned a nomination for Dance Single of the Year at the 2011 Juno Awards. In late 2010, Don Omar collaborated with Martina to release a remix version of "Stereo Love". The singer followed up with "Latin Moon" in August 2011, a song which reached gold sales and was rereleased in French and Spanish. The single also saw a fourth release featuring R&B label mate Massari. The original version was nominated in the Dance/Urban/Rhythmic category at the 2012 Canadian Radio Music Awards.
Martina's debut album Devotion was released on August 29, 2011 and reached number 77 on the Canadian Albums Chart. The album earned nominations for Dance Recording of the Year at the 2012 Juno Awards and World Recording of the Year at the 2012 East Coast Music Awards. Two more singles were released off Devotion, "Burning" and "Go Crazy", produced by Adrian Sina of the group Akcent.
Controversy
On January 7, 2011 Maya posted a statement expressing his disappointment with "the music industry" and the use of his name to promote Mia Martina's concerts, alleging that Martina's promoters were misleading audiences into believing that Maya would be present at Martina's concerts.[3]
Maya does not know Martina personally and states that he does not "approve of her", though the actual meaning of this is unclear. A letter, addressed to CP Records, allegedly written by Maya's legal team, has described their opposition to the marketing of Martina's tour. The letter suggests that Martina has been promoting her performances as "cover performances" of Maya. Maya's legal team apparently disagrees that her performances qualify as "covers".[3]
The original version by Maya and Vika Jigulina was already a Top 20 hit on Canadian Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 19 before it was outpeaked by the version promoted with Mia Martina, reaching No. 10.
