Metrolina Speedway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Metrolina Speed and Sport Center is an auto racing track located in northeast Charlotte, North Carolina on the Metrolina Fairgrounds. The track currently is being rebuilt with the 1/2-mile now paved. The plan for the rebuild also adds a Go-Kart track, outdoor RC racing track, a hotel, roof-top state park and more.

The track, also known as Charlotte Fairgrounds Speedway and Metrolina Speedway, is 1/2 mile (.804 km) in length and has a clay surface. It was paved for a short time in the 1970s to allow the NASCAR circuit to hold races there and will be again for racing starting in 2010. Many racers have raced at Metrolina Speedway, including Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Harry Gant. It is one of many racetracks in the Metrolina region of North Carolina and South Carolina.

A soccer team has expressed interest in the speedway, seeking a ground of its own instead of using the standard league fields. The team is not connected with the Charlotte Eagles.
