The Mercedes-Benz W222 is the latest and upcoming version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and the successor of the Mercedes-Benz W221. The W222, designed during 2009 by Il-hun Yoon and Robert Lesnik, continues the design theme first seen on the CLA-Class and facelifted E-Class that were developed subsequent to it.

In Europe, sales of the S 400 Hybrid, S 350 BlueTEC, S 350 BlueTEC Hybrid, and S 500 begin in September 2013. US sales of the S 550 will also begin in September; the 4Matic all-wheel drive model went on sale in November, 2013. Additional models, including V12 models and those from AMG are expected in 2014.[3][4]

The newest S-Class debuted on 15 May 2013 in Sindelfingen, Germany and entered production in June.

Technology

Suspension

Mercedes' Airmatic Active Body Control air suspension has been updated with a system dubbed Magic Body Control that is fitted with a road-sensing system that pre-loads the shocks for the road surface detected. Using a stereo camera, the system scans the road surface up to 15 meters ahead of the vehicle at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph), and it adjusts the magnetorheological shocks dampening at each wheel to account for imperfections in the road.[4][5]

Audio

A new Burmester 24-speaker surround sound audio system is available.

Safety

The massive all-LED navigation and information system, standard on all S-Class models.

The latest S-Class continues to use and improve upon the PRE-SAFE collision avoidance system that Mercedes first introduced in the early 2000s. The PRE-SAFE Brake system uses a stereo camera and radar sensors to detect pedestrians and can initiate autonomous braking of the vehicle to avoid a collision from up to 50 km/h. PRE-SAFE Plus increases rear-end protection using radar sensors as well. If the vehicle detects an imminent rear-end collision, it will blink the hazard lights at a high frequency. If the S-Class is stationary, the vehicle will increase brake pressure to reduce the vehicle movement post-collision, thus reducing the risk of whiplash and secondary collisions due to vehicle movement after the initial rear-end collision. Lastly, PRE-SAFE Impulse can, early in the progress of a crash, use pyrotechnics to immediately retract the seat belts at all 3 anchors to pull the seat occupant tightly against the seat back, helping to absorb energy from the crash.

The W222 also introduces two new airbag concepts for Mercedes. Seat belt airbags are used in the rear-seats to help reduce the load on the ribcage during a crash. Airbags within the front part of each seat bottom would be deployed if the seat is in a reclined position. These cushionbags raise the front part of the seat, reducing the likelihood of an occupant sliding under the seat belt in a front-end collision.[6]

Lighting

The all-LED headlight assembly found on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222).
The all-LED tail light assembly of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222).

The W222 S-Class has a unique lighting system: Exterior and interior lighting is composed only of LEDs, the first automobile to do so. All models include all-LED lighting, though the number depends on the equipment of the specific vehicle. The LEDs are placed as such:

  • Headlamps - each with up to 56
  • Tail lamps - each with up to 35
  • Interior - approximately 300

In addition, the W222 includes automatic high-beam headlamps. Like those that have debuted on other luxury models, including the Audi A8, the high beam lamps will be dimmed automatically at night when cars with headlamps or tail lamps on are detected via sensors.[7]

DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist

In some cases the W222 can steer by itself through city traffic with Steering Assist, that is able to provide additional support when it comes to directional stability – namely lateral lane guidance for the car.

DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control, a system which helps with maintaining the desired distance from another vehicle in front - can speed up the car to 120 miles per hour (190 km/h), using radars, infrared and optical sensors.[8] It can also park itself.[8]
