Meng Jianzhu (Chinese: 孟建柱; pinyin: Mèng Jiànzhù; born July 1947) is the secretary of Central Politics and Law Commission of the Communist Party of China, succeeding Zhou Yongkang.[1] The post oversees all legal and law enforcement and was usually headed by a member of the highest ruling party council CPC Politburo Standing Committee itself prior to Meng's appointment. Meng Jianzhu is one of the 25 members of the Politburo, the second highest council within the party. Prior to that he was the Minister of Public Security of China and Communist Party Chief of Jiangxi Province.
Life and career
Meng was born in July 1947, a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province.
Meng was one of the deputy mayors of Shanghai from 1993 to 1996. In 1996 he was promoted to become the deputy Communist Party secretary of Shanghai, a position he held until 2001.
In 2001, Meng was appointed the Communist Party secretary of Jiangxi Province. He remained in that position until 28 October 2007, when he was transferred to Beijing and appointed the Minister of the Public Security, replacing Zhou Yongkang, who was elevated to become a member of the Politburo Standing Committee.
Meng was appointed Politburo member and succeeded Zhou as secretary of the Central Politics and Law Commission of the Communist Party of China after the Party's 18th National Congress in November 2012, becoming the top decision-maker in the legal arena. In December, he was succeeded by Guo Shengkun as minister of Public Security at the 30th session of the 11th National People's Congress Standing Committee.
