Mehreen Faruqi

Mehreen Faruqi is a Pakistani-born Australian politician. She has been a Greens member of the New South Wales Legislative Council since 19 June 2013, when she was appointed to the vacancy caused by Cate Faehrmann's resignation to contest the Senate.[1]

She studied at the University of Engineering and Technology in Lahore and worked as a consultant in Pakistan before moving to Sydney in 1992. She received a Masters and a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of New South Wales. Before her appointment to the Legislative Council, she was Academic Director of the Master of Business and Technology Program and an Associate Professor at the Australian Graduate School of Management for the University of New South Wales.[2] She joined the Greens in 2004 and ran as a candidate for the Legislative Assembly seat of Heffron in 2011 and at the 2012 by-election. She was chosen to replace Faehrmann in 2013, becoming the first Muslim woman elected to any Australian parliament.[3]
