Mehmet Ali Şahin
Mehmet Ali Şahin (born 16 September 1950) is a Turkish politician. He was the Speaker of the Parliament of Turkey between 2009 and 2011.[1]
He was the member of the parliament for three terms from Istanbul Province and from Antalya Province of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party). He earlier served as the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Justice, and the Minister of State responsible for sports.[1]
Şahin is a lawyer, a graduate of Istanbul University faculty of law, and before entering the parliament, he had been involved in regional politics serving as the mayor of Fatih district in Istanbul, with Welfare Party (RP), and later with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's Justice and Development Party.[1][2]
On 5 August 2009, he was elected in third round as the 24th (27th, from the establishment) Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly succeeding his party colleague Köksal Toptan.[1]
