Mecheri (Tamil: மேச்சேரி) is a panchayat town in Salem district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[1] Mecheri had a population of 21,020. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Mecheri has an average literacy rate of 59%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 66%, and female literacy is 50%. In Mecheri, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. Now the town become more populated due to JSW (www.jindalsteel.com) Steel Factory. More famous about Hand loom silks export business.
Temple/Economy
Mecheri is one of the divine places and celebrated one, Where the omni potent goddess in the form of "Vada Bhadrakeli" is showering her blessings on the being in the universe.There are wide corrifors and mandapams surrounding the temple.Rajagopuram is main entrance to the temple. The temple facing north/ is situated in south -east direction in the heart of mechari town nearby Salem- Dharmapuri highway. Besides this,there are three rajagopurams in three directions.In the west of salem which is noted for sweetmango which stands first in "tri-fruit" i.e., mango,jack-fruit and banana.
Mecheri is situated on the high-way of salem-mettur Dam. Mecheri is 33 km away from salem and 20km away from mettur dam which is for cauvery river. Mecheri is surrounded by the lake and beautiful green meadows.It is also surrounded by south vallattu nadu and thoppaiyam.
Mecheri which is famous for "Mecheri special sheep" where around 300 people meet at same place for sheep trading on Wednesday of the every week. Sheep research office was started by government here located 5 km near to mecheri bus stand.
