This location lies approximately 295 kilometres (183 mi), by road, southwest of Kampala, the capital of Uganda and the largest city in that country.[1] The coordinates of Mbarara Hospital are:0° 36' 59.00"S, 30° 39' 32.00"E (Latitude:-0.616389; Longitude:30.658890).

Overview

Mbarara Hospital is a public hospital, founded by the Uganda Ministry of Health, and general care in the hospital is free. It is affiliated with the medical school of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, one of the four medical schools in Uganda. The hospital is staffed by medical students and residents. The medical students are good, and the residents are really excellent.[2]

The hospital is one of three (3) "National Referral Hospitals" in Uganda, the others being Mulago National Referral Hospital and Butabika National Referral Hospital.[3] Mbarara Hospital is designated as one of 15 "Internship Hospitals" in Uganda where graduates of Ugandan medical schools can serve one year of internship under the supervision of qualified specialists and consultants.[4] Its bed capacity is 600, although, as is the case with many Ugandan public hospitals, many more patients are admitted, with the excess sleeping on the floors.

Renovations

In January 2011, the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, laid the foundation stone at the hospital, to mark the renovation, rehabilitation and expansion of the hospital and transform it into a National Referral Hospital. The physical works, undertaken by Excel Construction Company, a subsidiary of the Madhvani Group. At that time, approximately 35% of the construction was complete.[5] The work, expected to take approximately one year, is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2011. The hospital's bed capacity is going to increase from 300 to 608.[6]
