Maximilian Paul Diarmuid "Max" Irons[1] (born 17 October 1985)[2] is an English film actor and model. He is perhaps most noted for his roles in Red Riding Hood, The White Queen and, most recently, in The Host.[3]

Early life

Irons was born in Camden, London,[4] and is the son of Irish actress Sinéad Cusack and English actor Jeremy Irons, and the grandson of Irish actors Cyril Cusack and Maureen Kiely.[5][6] His brother is photographer Samuel Irons, and his half-brother is politician Richard Boyd Barrett.

He attended the Dragon School in Oxford[7] and graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2008.[8] Irons also suffered from dyslexia through his school years and his father discouraged him from going into an acting career.[9] While first starting off in acting, Irons worked as a bartender.[10]

Career

Acting

In 2011, Irons played the role of Henry in Catherine Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood, with co-stars Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman.[11] Max was chosen to play Jared Howe in the 2013 film adaptation of The Host, based on Stephenie Meyer's novel of the same name alongside Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, and Jake Abel.[12] The Host was released in theatres on 29 March 2013.[13]

In the 2013 television series The White Queen, Irons took the lead role of Edward IV of England. The series, based on Philippa Gregory's bestselling historical novel series The Cousins' War, was broadcast weekly on BBC One, ending on 18 August 2013.[14] His portrayal won him the "Best Leading Male" award at the History Is Present Awards for period based dramas, in July 2013[15]

He will play the role of Vivaldi in the 2013 film Vivaldi.[citation needed] Irons is currently filming the film adaptation of Posh.[16]

Modelling

Irons has modelled for companies including Burberry and Mango. [17] As of 2012, he was on a modelling contract for Macy's I.N.C. collection for Fall/Winter 2012 as reported on 15 August 2012 by the Huffington Post.[18]

Personal life

In 2011, Irons began a relationship with actress Emily Browning. Reportedly, Browning broke up with Irons in the summer of 2012.[19]
