Mawana is a town in Meerut district in the Uttar Pradesh state of India. In the northeast side of town is Mawana sugar works. Its name comes from the word "Muhana" means Gateway. It is supposed to be the Muhana of Hastinapur kingdom. Hastinapur is a Mahabharat period town situated nearby.[citation needed] Mawana name descendant from Mavi[Gurjar].

Jagdish Prakash Kaushik, was the first person to be honored with the title of Krishi Pandit by the Government of India for his outstanding contribution to the wheat produce. His family has lived in Mawana for generations.

Electricity come to the village 1964. The main occupation of this town is the farming of sugar cane. SANDHAN is Very Famous Village in Mawana Tashil. It is 6 KM from Mawana Town.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Mawana had a population of 69,199. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Mawana has an average literacy rate of 53%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 61%, and female literacy is 44%. In Mawana, 17% of the population is under 6 years of age. Mawana contains many castes, 40% Muslims, 60% Hindu and rest others, mawana is bazar for nearer villages chauhan rajputs, Gurjars, jat, baniya (Gupta's & Rastogi's), jains, chauhan are casts which mainly found nearby. Also there is an Inter College named A.S. Inter College whose foundation is put by first Prime Minister of India Shri Jawaharlal Nehru. Its Library is one of the biggest library in Mawana.

Pakka talab is also a mahabharatkalin pond.

History

Mawana is an old town, where many sayyed families reside. The main ones live in the Khairaat Ali, a mohalla named after Sayyed Khairaat Ali. The family of Khairaat Ali belonged to the bloodline of Sayyed Qasim Khan barha a mansabdar in emperor Akbar's court, son of the famous Sayyed Mahmud Khan barha kundliwal the powerful military general of Akbar's court. In Mawana there is an old pool named "talab ka Kuwa". Mawana is 25 km from MEERUT.
