Matías Nicolás Rodríguez (Spanish pronunciation: [maˈti.as niˈkolas roˈðɾiɣes], born 14 April 1986) is an Argentine footballer that currently plays for Serie A club Sampdoria and the Argentine national team as a right midfielder. Rodríguez also operates as a right back or also as a winger in the same zone too. He including became the first football player of the Chilean Primera División in the 21st century, in play at the football team of Argentina, after of the coach Alejandro Sabella, call–up him to Ezeiza for the 2014 World Cup qualifications.

He began his career at the football academy of Boca Juniors, at a very young age. Then after trials at the Ecuadorian clubs of Barcelona SC and Aucas in January 2006, then, two years later, he signed a pre–contract with Austrian side LASK Linz, however failed to join after of another trial. Finally, he signed for Nacional of Uruguayan Primera División in June 2008, achieving the next season a successful campaign in the Copa Libertadores under the orders of the coach Gerardo Pelusso. Rodríguez moved to Primera División club Universidad de Chile in 2010, winning the following season the Copa Sudamericana under Jorge Sampaoli's orders.

Club career

Early career

Rodríguez arrived at Boca Juniors junior team in the 2006–07 season. In August 2006, thanks to the businessman José Luis Miguel, he went on trial to Ecuadorian Serie A giants Barcelona, but was not taken on. He also was rejected by Aucas and returned to La Bombonera, in where joined to the reserve team, being teammate with players like Marcos Mondaini or Nicolás Bertolo, who lived a similar situation of Rodríguez. In the end of the season, he left the club, because Carlos Ischia (coach of Boca) not considered him in the team.

In January 2008, was invited to train with LASK Linz, an important team of the Austrian Bundesliga, in where unfortunately Matías not passed the test. In mid–year, Uruguayan powerhouse club Nacional signed him, after observations of the head coach Gerardo Pelusso, who under his orders reached the 2009 edition of the Copa Libertadores semifinals against Estudiantes de La Plata. On 14 January 2010, following the coach Pelusso's departure to Primera División powerhouse club Universidad de Chile, he also joined to the same club as the last signing of the summer window transfer, being the seventh, after of Esteban Conde.^[1]

Rodríguez soon became a very important cog in the team, and scored important goals in the tournament (some against Colo-Colo and Universidad Católica). Universidad de Chile reached the semifinals of the 2010 Copa Libertadores, and Rodríguez played an important part in this campaign.

The following year, the club won the 2011 Copa Sudamericana, and Rodríguez was recognized as one of the more important footballers in the tournament (playing sometimes as a defender and at other times in midfield).

Sampdoria

On 29 January 2013, Rodríguez joined Italian Serie A club U.C. Sampdoria, for a 3 million dollars fee.^[2]

International career

In 2012, Matías Rodríguez was selected by Alejandro Sabella for the Argentina national team as part of the squad for the FIFA World Cup qualification match against Ecuador national football team. However he did not play in the game.
