Marymount College, Palos Verdes is an independent, Catholic, coeducational and residential college that offers a liberal arts program that leads to associate degrees and bachelor's degrees.[1] Situated along the coastline of Rancho Palos Verdes, California,[2] Marymount College is one of two Catholic, co-educational colleges in Los Angeles County, California and one of five Marymount institutions of higher education. The College is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.[3] The campus occupies 26 acres (11 ha) overlooking the Pacific Ocean, approximately 25 miles (40 km) to the south of Los Angeles, California.[1] In summer 2011, Marymount College opened the Waterfront Campus in San Pedro, Los Angeles.[4]

On Friday, March 29, 2013, Marymount College announced that it is changing its name to Marymount California University (MCU) to "reflect the gradual transformation of the 45-year-old institution of higher education to a future multisite institution with undergraduate and graduate programs." [1]

History

The history of Marymount college dates to the establishment of an elementary school and high school for women by seven sisters of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary. Marymount Junior College opened as an all-women's school on the Westwood, Los Angeles campus of Marymount High School in 1933. Mother Gertrude Cain, R.S.H.M., served as the first president of the junior college and guided its development into a four-year college in 1948, assuming the name Marymount College of Los Angeles. In 1948, the College received accreditation as a four-year college.[5] In 1960, having outgrown its shared Westwood campus, Marymount College moved both its two-year program and its four-year program[5] to the campus of a former girls High School[6] on the Palos Verdes Peninsula south of Los Angeles.

Marymount was the first Catholic junior college in California and began as a liberal arts college for women. In the mid-1960s discussions began on admitting women to the undergraduate program at Loyola University.[5] The affiliation of Marymount College and Loyola University began in 1968 when Marymount's four-year program relocated to the Loyola University campus in Westchester, Los Angeles.[5] Marymount maintained its two-year program on the Palos Verdes campus. The merger of Marymount College and Loyola University was completed in 1973 forming Loyola Marymount University.[5]

The two-year program remained incorporated as a separate institution having received accreditation as such in 1971. In 1975, the college was named Marymount Palos Verdes College upon its move to its present location in Rancho Palos Verdes. The College offers two-year Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees and a four-year Bachelor's Degree program.[7] In 1987, the name changed again to Marymount College, Palos Verdes.

Campuses

The Main Campus encompasses 26-acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catilina Island in Rancho Palos Verdes.[8]

The Waterfront Campus encompasses first floor of the former Northrop Grumman facility at 222 W. Sixth St., which will be transformed into classroom space and offices to accommodate upper division business majors and students majoring in global studies. Those students also will expand their use in the coming year of the Warner Grand Theatre, the Grand Annex in the 400 block of West Sixth Street and student artists will also show work this year in gallery space at the historic Arcade Building.[4]

Residential Communities includes Palos Verdes North Drive Residential Community. Marymount also recently upgraded the 30-unit Pacific View West on 24th Street, which is its other residential community proper .[4]

In 2013 Marymount opened a campus in Lake County, California in the town of Lucerne overlooking Clear Lake in what had been the Lucerne Hotel.

Student Body

Athletics

Marymount College teams, nicknamed athletically as the Mariners, are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA),[12] primarily competing in the California Pacific Conference (CalPac). Men's and women's sports include cross country, golf, lacrosse and soccer.
