Marvin Höner (born 4 May 1994 in Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia) is a German professional football player who currently plays as a forward for AFC Ajax and for Germany U-19.[2]
Career
Arminia Bielefeld
Born and raised in Bielefeld, Marvin is the product of the youth ranks of local German 2. Bundesliga side Arminia Bielefeld, having last played for the clubs A-Juniors team during the 2012–13 season, where he scored 9 goals in 12 matches in the German Under 19 Bundesliga finishing the season in 7th place.[3] he had previously played in the Under 17 Bundesliga for his home team.[4] His performance for his club as well as for the German Under-19 squad garnered attention from several clubs, including Dutch giants AFC Ajax, for whom he served a trial period appearing in the annual Copa Amsterdam (18–20 May 2013) playing for the Ajax A1 team in the tournament while scoring once.[5]
AFC Ajax
On 24 June 2013 it was announced that Marvin Höner had signed a 2-year contract with the club from Amsterdam.[6] With a year to play still remaining on his contract with Arminia Bielefeld, an undisclosed transfer fee between the two clubs was agreed upon.[7] It was later revealed that the fee was € 150.000 (€ 50.000 as a reserve, and an additional € 100.000 when Marvin breaks into the first team). Furthermore Arminia Bielefeld receive an additional € 100.000, should Ajax decide to sell the young striker, prior to the expiration of his contract.[8]
Marvin Höner is only the fifth German ever to play for Ajax.[9] (Sixth if you include Nando Rafael, an International footballer who plays for the Angola national team, who also holds German citizenship).[10] The other German players who came before him include Werner Schaaphok (1959–1965), Horst Blankenburg (1970–1975), Arno Steffenhagen (1973–1976), and Peter Lübeke (1977), ending a 36 year absence, since the last German player who had played for Ajax.[11]
During the 2013–14 pre-season, Marvin made his first appearance for Ajax on 13 July 2013 in a friendly match against De Graafschap in Doetinchem, coming on in the 63' minute for Viktor Fischer in the 3–0 away win for the Amsterdammers.[12] On 5 August 2013, he made his professional debut playing for the reserves team Jong Ajax, in what would be their first ever match in the Dutch Jupiler League, the second tier of professional football in the Netherlands. Having been recently promoted from the Beloften Eredivisie, Marvin appeared in the season opener against Telstar in the Amsterdam Arena which ended in a 2–0 victory for Jong Ajax.[13]
International career
Marvin Höner made his debut for the German national under-19 team in a friendly encounter against France U-19 on 14 November 2012, having received his first call-up from U-19 head coach Christian Ziege. The match ended in a 3–0 victory for the Germans at the Rhein-Stadion in Kehl.[14] His second appearance for the under-19 squad, was in a 1–0 away loss against Italy U-19 on 6 February 2013 at the Stadio Gustavo Ventura in Bisceglie, Italy.[15]
