Martyn Andrews is a British television presenter, broadcast journalist, professional actor and singer.
Andrews has hosted a variety of travel and lifestyle TV shows and has appeared as a guest on several major networks including CNN, RT International (Russia Today), ITV, BBC1 and Euronews. He has visited over 550 cities and towns around the world and is used as an arts and travel expert by media all over the globe.[citation needed] He is represented by London based television agent Seamus Lyte.[1]
Early life
Born in Liverpool he was brought up in Crosby, attended St Nicholas Primary School, Manor High School (1990-1995) and then completed a B(Tech) National Diploma in Performing Arts at Southport College (1995–1997).
Originally called Andrew Martin he moved to London in 1996 to appear in the London production of the National Youth Music Theatre's production of Threepenny Opera. He changed his name to Martyn Andrews for equity reasons in 1997 and trained at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts graduating in early 2000. He later studied journalism at the No Sweat College (both in London).
He has lived and worked on several major television and stage projects in the UK, Germany, Israel, Egypt, Australia, America and Russia.
As a trained professional actor and singer Andrews appeared on television and in major musicals in the UK and Europe such as Starlight Express, Hello Dolly, Rock Hard, Whistle Down The Wind and Copacabana.
Career
Andrews was most recently used as an arts and culture expert for CNN International's popular evening programme "Connect The World". He also recently appeared as travel expert for ITV's popular daily programme The Alan Titchmarsh Show. He is currently also the travel, food and culture expert for the international English speaking news channel RT Russia Today. As one of the original faces of the global network, he co-presented in the network's first ever hour on 10 December 2005. He writes and hosts the channel's main light entertainment programming.
Andrews is currently the art and entertainment correspondent for RT's morning and evening magazine live programmes Priv'et Russia and Prime Time Russia as well as the networks main culture expert on RT International news. A large selection of Andrews' programmes are also broadcast on RTD Russia Today's new documentary channel, YouTube, RTCY in Cyprus, Airiang in South Korea, the high speed Sapsan train network and onboard many Aeroflot longhaul flight routes.
Andrews is most known for his travel and adventure programme "Wayfarer" - broadcast and dubbed in 100 countries. The show took him from minus 40 to plus 40 to 4 continents - through the 11 times zones of Russia and the CIS countries. Programme highlights included the Polar Circle, Outer Mongolia, the Black Sea, Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal and climbing the tallest mountain in Europe Elbruss.
Andrews has hosted, created and produced a range of other TV shows on several major networks around the globe. Other international television projects have included the award winning programmes "My Abyss" a diving documentary filming in dozens of exotic marine locations, the Egyptian adventure series "Pyramid Quest", the live UK chat show "Lounge Living", and travel shows "The Golden Ring - A Tour in Time", two series of "Venice of the North: A Season in St Petersburg" and three years of the award winning culture show "Moscow Out".
He also authored and hosted "Russian Around" a special off spin series filming in London, Paris, Rome and Florence, presented the live TV coverage at the 2009 Moscow Eurovision Song Contest, the opening of the new Marinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, from the 2013 Moscow Film Festival, the live Soyuz rocket launch of the olympic torch to the International Space Station at Baikonur, Kazakhstan in October 2013 and was part of the official live reporting team from the Winter Olympics in Sochi, 2014.
Journalism
As a journalist, Andrews writes for dozens of lifestyle and travel publications ranging from MetroStyle magazine in Beijing and Conde Nast Traveller to Transaero and Etihad in-flight Magazines.
He is also a food critic, a guest travel speaker, television panel guest and is often used by a range of networks, print and world wide media as a travel and culture expert. Known for his jetsetting lifestyle, he currently lives between London, Moscow and Cyprus.
In 2010 popular celebrity magazine "OK" highlighted Andrews' career in a travel article called "The One to Watch". In late 2011, UK lifestyle magazine "Beige" featured him in a story titled "The Rising Tsar". In November 2011 he was awarded the "Sheremedia Award" for Best Culture Programme.
In 2013, Andrews was a guest on two round table discussions held by Russia Today on the topic of the new amendment concerning the promotion of homosexual behaviour amongst minors. During the programs, he identified as a gay man who lives in Russia as an expatriate and who has not had any problems himself, indicating that life for LGBT is not as bad as what is portrayed by western media.[2]
