Martuni Rayon was one of the five rayons of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO) of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic (AzSSR).[1] In 1991 the parliament of Azerbaijan abolished Martuni province, incorporating its territory into the neighbouring Azerbaijani rayon of Khojavend.[2]
The unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic has defined its Martuni Province as being the former Martuni Rayon, plus some surrounding land captured during the Nagorno-Karabakh War from Azerbaijan. The eastern part of Martuni Rayon remains in Azerbaijani control.
