Martha Lorena Fierro Baquero[1] (born September 6, 1977 in Kingston, Rhode Island, USA)[2] is a chess Woman Grandmaster and open International Master.[3] She also holds the FIDE Trainer title, acquired after successful examination at the FIDE Seminar for Coaches in Vung Tau, Vietnam on 29.10.2008.[4]
She has been Ecuador's strongest female chess player for many years, and has represented Ecuador in eight biennial Chess Olympiads (1994–96, 2000-2010). Her best results were when she scored 9.5/13 in the 32nd Chess Olympiad in Yerevan 1992, and 7.5/8 in the 38th Chess Olympiad in Dresden 2008, to win the silver medal on board 1 on both occasions.[5]
She is a frequent visitor to the United States and has a second home in Charlotte, North Carolina. Today she lives with her mother in Ecuador, and in addition to her professional chess competition, Fierro has worked as a chess journalist. Fierro is the Secretary for the FIDE Commission for Women's Chess (WOM), and attended the 2012 World Conference for Sport and Women, the fifth in this series, held in Los Angeles.[6][7]
