Marta is a Bulgarian, Catalan, Czech, Finnish, Galician, Georgian, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Latvian, Polish, Portuguese, Slovak, Spanish, and Ukrainian female given name derived from the Hebrew (Judæo-Aramaic) name מַרְתָּא Martâ "The lady", but some sources claim that it was in use even before the establishment of Christianity, meaning dedicated to Mars.[1] It had the male form "Martinus" in Roman culture. It has been described as a cognate of Martha[2] and as a feminine variation of Martinus.[1]
