Marshall railway station is located in Marshall, a suburb of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. The station opened on 26 April 2005. The station is the terminus of V/Line Geelong line services and includes a run-around loop for locomotive-hauled trains.

The infrequently-used Geelong Racecourse station was formerly located between South Geelong and Marshall stations.

Victoria's electronic ticketing system, Myki, was implemented on rail services between Marshall and Melbourne on 29 July 2013.[1]

History

Marshall station first opened in 1879 as "Connewarre", on the "up" side of the Marshalltown Road level crossing. The previous year had seen the opening of the Geelong Racecourse branch, which left the main line a few hundred metres past the station, but closed in 1909 when the racecourse was relocated closer to Geelong. In 1912 a pipe making factory was opened at the "down" end, for works on Geelong's sewer outfall. A narrow gauge tramway was used during construction.

The station was renamed Marshall in 1907. The passenger platform was removed in 1958, and Marshall was closed to all traffic in 1964.

Reopening

The Regional Fast Rail project involved an upgrade of the line between Melbourne and Geelong, as well as a new station at Grovedale to service its growing population.[2]

Although two other sites were originally proposed,[3] it was eventually decided to construct the new station on the site of the former Marshall station.[4] That decision was controversial, as many in the local community had wanted the station be built in Grovedale itself, while others were pushing for the station to be at Waurn Ponds to serve the nearby Deakin University.

In 2010 the car park at the station was expanded and a secure "Parkiteer" bike cage installed.[5]
