Marla Malcolm Beck is the founder and CEO of Bluemercury and M-61 Laboratories. Ms. Beck founded Bluemercury with her husband Barry Beck in 1999. The couple founded M-61 Laboratories in 2006.[1]

Business Career

Marla and Barry Beck founded Bluemercury in 1999 in Georgetown, Washington, DC. As of January 2014, Bluemercury has 48 stores throughout the U.S.[2]

In 2006, Marla and Barry Beck founded the cosmeceutical line M-61 Laboratories.[3] M-61 Laboratories is sold exclusively at Bluemercury locations.

Prior to founding Bluemercury, Beck was a consultant at McKinsey and Company. Beck holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, an MPA from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and a B.A. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley. She is on the Advisory Board of Harvard Business School’s Rock Center for Entrepreneurship and is a current member of the Young President’s Organization.

In the Media

Beck has appeared as a guest on CNBC, CNN and Fox Business News, and has also been a guest speaker for Women's Wear Daily Beauty Innovation Forum. She was Ernst and Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 2005.[4] Beck is often sought after for her seasonal beauty picks and industry insight.[5] She maintains a blog in which she discusses her product favorites and sneak peaks of upcoming launches.[6]

Beck's entrepreneurial career has been featured in the books Shopping: Why We Love It and How Retailers can Create the Ultimate Customer Experience, Be Happy at Work: 100 Women Who Love Their Jobs and Why, and “The Intelligent Entrepreneur".[7]

Personal Life

Beck is a California native. She currently lives in the Washington, DC area with her husband, Barry Jon Beck, and her three children. She has been a vegetarian for over 20 years.[8]
