Markus Lanz (born 16 March 1969 in Bruneck, South Tyrol) is an Italian television presenter.
Early life
Although Lanz holds Italian citizenship, he works exclusively in German television as a presenter. He is a member of the native German speaking majority in the Italian province of South Tyrol. He grew up in Geiselsberg, a village that lies 1344 meters above sea level in the central alps. He has stated that his family was rather poor, after his father died early and his mother was left with 3 children. Especially in the winter months they had to rely on outside help.[1] Due to his very good school grades he earned a scholarship to the monastery of Neustift and attended the classical secondary school in Brixen. Eventually he finshed high school in Bruneck. After graduating he served in the alpine division of the Italian army as a radio operator and started working at the radio station Radio Holiday. In 1992 he graduated from the Bayerische Akademie für Werbung und Marketing in Munich with a degree in Business Communications.
Early career
In 1992 he started a two year trainee program at Radio Hamburg in Hamburg. In 1995 he became the news announcer at the regional TV station RTL North and 1997 eventually became presenter of a regional evening news show in Schleswig-Holstein.
Today
Lanz is widely recognised[citation needed] for his open mind and unconventional way of interacting with people and interviewing them. However these qualities are often referred to by his critics as childlike.[citation needed]
Since 2008 he has hosted the weekly cooking show Lanz kocht!.
Since October 2009 he hosted the talkshow Markus Lanz three evenings a week.
Since October 2012 he has presented the monthly German TV show Wetten, dass..? and succeeded Thomas Gottschalk.
Private Life
Lanz plays the piano and had a band together with his brother. He has a son (born 2000) from a previous relationship with TV presenter Birgit Schrowange (born 1958). In July 2011 Lanz married Angela Gessmann of German-Japanese origin.[2]
