Mark Crispin Rake Sowerby (born 28 October 1963[3]) is the Bishop of Horsham.[4][5]
Sowerby was educated at King's College, London and ordained after studying at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield in 1988. His first posts were curacies at Knaresborough and Darwen [6] after which he was Vicar of Accrington then Vocations Officer and Selection Secretary in The Ministry Division. His last post before his appointment to the episcopate was as Team Rector of St. Wilfrid's Church, Harrogate and Rural Dean of Harrogate.[7][8][9]
Sowerby is married with three children.[1] One of his final acts as rector was to welcome a proposal from NEDL to erect a primary electricity station in the curtilage of the church. This proposal, which has yet to be considered by the planning committee of Harrogate Borough Council, has generated a vast amount of criticism from, amongst others, the Victorian Society, Private Eye magazine and residents of Harrogate.[10]
During a protracted investigation into the efficacy of Safeguarding practices in the Diocese and an upcoming vacancy in see, Sowerby has additionally been Acting Bishop of Chichester. The senior suffragan of the diocese, Wallace Benn, is involved with the ongoing investigation.
