Mark 'Spike' Stent (born 3 August 1965) is an English producer/mixing engineer who has worked with many international artists including: Madonna, U2, Beyoncé, Björk, Depeche Mode, Spice Girls, Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Maroon 5, Muse, Lily Allen, Gwen Stefani, Moby, No Doubt, Usher, Linkin Park, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Oasis, Keane, Massive Attack, and Bastille.[2]
He got the nickname 'Spike' in 1987 when he was working as an engineer for producer John Paul Jones on an album for The Mission. The band couldn't remember his name, but could remember his hairstyle and the nickname stuck[3]
Professional music software company Waves cloned Stent's mixing desk to create a software plugin, for producers who want to emulate Stent's signature sound. They state that Stent ‘creates mixes across all genres.’[4]
Awards and nominations
Stent has won three Grammy's including: Best Rock Album in 2010 for Muse 'The Resistance'[5]Best Contemporary R&B Album in 2009 for Beyoncé 'I Am... Sasha Fierce'[6] and Best Dance Electronica Album in 2006 with Madonna 'Confessions on a Dance Floor.'[7]
At the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards held in February 2011 Stent was nominated across four different genres: ‘Album of the Year’ with Lady Gaga for Fame Monster, ‘Best Rock Album’ with Muse for 'The Resistance' (Winner),[8] ‘Best Dance Electronica Album’ with Goldfrapp for 'Head First' and ‘Best Contemporary R&B Album’ with Usher Raymond V Raymond.
