Marivan (Persian: مريوان, (listen) ; Kurdish: مەریوان, Merîwan; also Romanized as Persian pronunciation Marīvān) also known as Qal‘eh-ye Marīvān - "Fort Marivan"; formerly, Dez Shahpur (Persian: دِژ شاهپور), also Romanized as Dezh Shāhpūr and Dezh Shapoor)[1] is a city in and capital of Marivan County, Kurdistan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 91,664, in 22,440 families.[2] Before the foundation of the city in 1950s, Marîwan was the name of the region[citation needed].

Marivan lies close to the border of Iran-Iraq (Iraqi Kurdistan). Because of official border market of Bashmaq which is between Kurdish region of Iraq and Iran, Marivan serves a destination for shoppers in neighbor provinces.

Lake Zarivar lies in the west of Marivan. Because of beautiful and preserved nature of Marivan, it has been always one of the most attractive places for tourist both in local and global scales.

The native language of the city is the central dialect of Kurdish (Sorani) with a minority of Hawrami dialect. The religion of the people is Shafi'i Sunni.
