Mario Caldato, Jr. (also known as Mario C.) is a Brazilian-born American record producer and studio engineer best known for his work with the Beastie Boys and Tone Loc.

Biography

Born February 24, 1961 in São Paulo, Brazil, he and his family moved to Los Angeles in 1963. Caldato played keyboards and percussion in various bands ("Soul Stick", "Wake", "Phaze" and "Phaze II"), and started a PA and DJ rental company with Mike Nishita, brother of his old friend "Money" Mark Nishita. After building several of his own studios and visiting Jamaica, he produced The Jungle Bugs then later met Matt Dike and engineered and helped co-produce Tone Loc and Young MC's first albums. Soon afterward Caldato engineered the Beastie Boys second album Paul's Boutique then co-produced Check Your Head, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty.

Since then, he has engineered, produced and or mixed many artists including Beck, Day One, Super Furry Animals and three Money Mark albums, Molotov's "Apocalypshit" and two Jack Johnson albums On & On, and In Between Dreams. He has also produced many Brazilian artists, including Planet Hemp, Marcelo D2, Seu Jorge, Bebel Gilberto, Marisa Monte, Vanessa da Mata, Nação Zumbi and Mallu Magalhães. In 2008, he mixed the self-titled debut EP of One Day as a Lion, a project comprising Zack de la Rocha (of Rage Against the Machine) and Jon Theodore (previously of The Mars Volta).^[1] He also mixed during 2008 the debut album of Banda de Turistas titled Magico Corazon Radiofonico, one of the new revelations of the Latin scene. In 2008, he produced the 2nd album of Joseph d'Anvers, a talented French songwriter, "Les Jours Sauvages", featuring appearances by Money Mark, Vanessa Da Mata, Moreno Veloso and Kassin & Domenico.

Recently, Caldato produced the Flobots album Survival Story, which was released in March 2010.^[2] and has also mixed and co-produced the Seu Jorge and Almaz self-titled album which was released by Now-Again Records in July 2010. Caldato has also organised, recorded and produced a charitable album with Anglo-Brazilian collaboratory supergroup, The Bottletop Band. The 2012 debut by Kids These Days, "Traphouse Rock," was recorded by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and mixed by Mario C. ^[3]
