Marin Transit is a public bus agency in Marin County, California, in the United States. Originally formed in 1964 as Marin County Transit District (MCTD), it was rebranded as Marin Transit on 30 July 2007. In addition to using a new logo, Marin Transit has taken an active role in local bus service that historically have been planned and operated by Golden Gate Transit on behalf of MCTD.
Description
Marin Transit uses four contractors to provide public transit service within Marin County:
- Golden Gate Transit operates all local bus service, which includes regular local fixed routes and some supplemental local fixed routes that operate on school days only.
- MV Transportation operates West Marin Stagecoach fixed routes, the Muir Woods Shuttle, and some supplemental local fixed routes that operate on school days only.
- Marin Airporter operates all community shuttle fixed routes.
- Whistlestop Wheels operates the Novato Dial-a-Ride demand-response service and Marin Access ADA complementary paratransit service.
Marin Transit serves all major cities, towns, and communities within Marin County except Muir Beach, Peacock Gap (East San Rafael), and portions of West Marin beyond Inverness.
History
Marin Transit was formed by a vote of the people of Marin County in 1964 and was given the responsibility for providing local transit service within Marin County. It has since played a key role in providing local transit service within the county through various funding sources (Measure A Funds, State Transportation Development Act Funds, fares, property taxes and Federal Section 5311 rural transit funds).[1] For a history of Marin Transit service in relation to Golden Gate Transit, click here.

Demand-response service
Transit service that does not operate along fixed routes is operated under contract with Whistlestop Wheels.
Novato Dial-a-Ride
The Novato Dial-a-Ride[4] provides curb-to-curb demand response service within the City of Novato by reservation only. Novato Dial-a-Ride, which replaced the EZ Rider service that served only portions of the city, supplements fixed-route bus service and operates to areas not served by buses, including Bahia, Bel Marin Keys, and Black Point.
Novato Dial-a-Ride operates daily. Reservations for weekday service are allowed up to seven days in advance, with same-day service available as space permits. Only same-day reservations are permitted for weekend service. No service is provided on holidays.
Marin Access
Complementary paratransit () service mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is operated within Marin County using the Marin Access name.[5] Service is available to eligible passengers by advance reservation.[6]
Fares
All Marin Transit fares, except the 6-month and yearly youth passes, also apply to all Golden Gate Transit routes operating within Marin County regardless of whether the service is under contract with Marin Transit. The Muir Woods Shuttle has special fares, which are described below. The Marin Access fare is $2.00 or $2.50, depending upon the origin and destination of the trip.[7]
Fare category | Cash fare | Clipper† | 1-day pass | 7-day pass | 31-day pass |

Child (ages 5 and under) | Free (maximum of 2 when accompanied by adult) | ||||

Note:
- † Clipper is not available on West Marin Stagecoach routes or on the Muir Woods Shuttle.
Muir Woods Shuttle fares
The fares and payment policy on Route 66/66F differ from other Marin Transit routes. The adult (ages 16+) round-trip fare is $5.00 and is collected at the Muir Woods Visitor Center in addition to the park entrance fee. A receipt must be shown upon boarding the bus for the return trip. The youth fare (ages 15 and under) is free.
Value Cards
Value Cards are prepaid fare media available in denominations of $18.00 and $36.00. Value Cards provide the same discounted fares as Clipper but can be used on all Marin Transit fixed-route services, including West Marin Stagecoach routes. Passengers must request the appropriate discount fare ($1.80 or $1.00) before inserting Value Cards into the farebox to avoid being charged the regular $2.00 fare. These cards may not be used on Golden Gate Transit routes for travel outside of Marin County.
Youth passes
Marin Transit Youth Passes (available for $175.00 for 6 months and $325.00 for one school year) are available to youths ages 6 through 18. The pass allows unlimited rides on any Marin Transit route but are not valid on Golden Gate Transit's Regional Basic and Commute routes (cf. List of Golden Gate Transit Routes).
