Maria João Koehler, also known as Maria João Köhler (born October 8, 1992) is a Portuguese professional tennis player. She reached her career high WTA singles ranking of 102 on February 2013. In November 2012, she became for the first time the Portuguese no. 1 tennis player. Her recent doubles results at ITF level have led her to became the highest ranked Portuguese female doubles player ever, achieving the 151st position on June 2012. Koehler has represented the Portugal Fed Cup team, where she has a singles win-loss record of 3–5 and a doubles win–loss record of 4–4 (7–9 overall). She is coached by former professional player Nuno Marques.

Career

Since her debut in October 2006 at the Braga Satellite tournament, where she lost her first match to Catarina Ferreira, Koehler has mainly played in the ITF circuit. Her first attempt to qualify to a WTA Tour tournament came in May 2007 at the Estoril Open but she lost at the first qualifying round to Neha Uberoi in straight sets. She debuted in the Tour at Estoril in May 2009 as a wild card against Kristina Barrois. The same month, she won the Cantanhede Satellite tournament. In June 2009, Koehler won the Amarante Satellite tournament. In July 2012, she won the Astana Satellite tournament.
