Małgorzata Jamroży (born June 30, 1991), known by her stage name Margaret, is a Polish singer and fashion blogger.[2] In late 2012, Jamroży signed a recording contract with German record label Mach1 Records, eventually partnered with Universal Music Poland, and released her first major debut single, "Thank You Very Much", released in February 2013.[3]

A subsequent EP, All I Need, was released on July 30, 2013.[4]

Career

Early career

Jamroży's career began during her senior year, as a singer-songwriter for the band oNieboLepiej (trans. "Much Better"), created in early January 2009.[5] During the same year, Jamroży was a winner on the 254th episode of Polish reality-singing competition show Szansa na sukces (trans. Chance for Success),[6] where she sang "Znam Cię na pamięć", originally sung by Monika Brodka, and performed during the main annual concert at the Congress Hall in Warsaw.[7] In 2010, she starred in the musical Rent at the Szczecin Opera in the Castle.[8] Jamroży had also been a singer-songwriter for the Gosia Jamroży Project (also known as the Margaret J. Project), a band she co-created, and performed at the semi-finals of the Coke Live Fresh Noise 2010.[9]

2012–2013: "Thank You Very Much"

Jamroży collaborated with award-winning director Chris Piliero (who regularly collaborates with The Black Keys, Britney Spears, and Ke$ha) to create a controversial music video for her debut single, "Thank You Very Much", in which she was surrounded by thirty naked extras; the video was banned from YouTube.[10] With this work, Jamroży aimed to propose rights for nudity under the slogan "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity".[11] Jamroży defended her position by saying that "even though YouTube, considered one of the leading defenders for freedom of speech of the 21st century, censored the video, I'm happy that my fans are able to understand it in another way."[11] The song was released in Poland for digital download on February 21, 2013, and charted #2 on the Polish Airplay Chart,[12] as well as #41 and #38 on Media Control Charts[13] and Austria Top 40,[14] respectively. She also performed "Thank You Very Much" during the Forest Opera "Trendy" concert at the 2012 Sopot TOPtrendy Festival[15] and "Największe Przeboje Roku" (trans. Biggest Hits of the Year) concert at the 2013 Sopot TOPtrendy Festival.[16]

2013: Baltic Song Contest, Eska Music Awards, and All I Need

On July 4, 2013, Jamroży’s second consecutive single, "Tell Me How Are Ya", premiered exclusively on Radio Eska, and was released for digital download on July 9.[17] She also performed at the Lato ZET i Dwójki 2013 (trans. Summer ZET and TVP2) concert in Słubice, Poland, where she sang "Thank You Very Much".[18]

In late July, Jamroży was chosen to represent Poland at the Baltic Song Contest 2013,[19] where she sang "Thank You Very Much" and "I Get Along", taking second place.[20] July 30 saw the release of her mini-EP, All I Need, debuting at #50 on the OLiS Charts.[21] During late August, she performed at the Stars for Free 2013 concert in Berlin, Germany, organized by German radio station, RTL Radio.[22]

Jamroży was nominated for various awards at the Eska Music Awards 2013, including Best Artist, Best Hit (for “Thank You Very Much”), Best Music Video (also for “Thank You Very Much”), and Best Debut.[23][24] Jamroży was also a nominee for the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards category, Best Polish Act.[25]

2014: "Wasted"

On December 31, Jamroży performed her third consecutive single, "Wasted", during the "Sylwestrowa Moc Przebojów" (trans. New Year's Eve Power Hits) concert in Gdynia, Poland.[26] "Wasted", the first single from her debut studio album, was released for digital download in Poland on January 15, 2014.[27] The day before, orange.pl kicked off the premiere of the music video for the song, directed by Julia Bui Ngoc.[28]
