Marco Alexander (born August 14, 1991) is a New Zealand professional basketball player who currently plays for the Waikato Pistons of the New Zealand National Basketball League. In 2009, Marco graduated from Rangitoto College.
2009–2012
In 2009, Marco played for the New Zealand Breakers Academy in the Conference Basketball League Zone 1.[1] In 2010, he played for Northside in the Supercity Basketball Competition.[2] In 2012, he played for the Harbour Heat Reserves in the Senior Intercity Basketball Competition.[3]
2009 Under-19 Nationals
At the 2009 Under-19 National Championship, Marco competed for Harbour. During the 3rd place playoff, Marco lead the way with 29 points in an 81-65 win over Otago.[4]
2010 Under-21 Nationals
At the 2010 Under-21 National Championship, Marco competed for Harbour.[5] He was named the tournament's MVP.[6]
2011 Under-21 Nationals
At the 2011 Under-21 National Championship, Marco competed for Waikato alongside Max Williams. In the 6 games Waikato played, Marco averaged a huge 42.6 points per game and in one game, Marco scored 50 points in an 87-71 victory over Palmerston North.[7]
New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL)
2011
2011 saw Marco begin his professional career with the Waikato Pistons in the New Zealand National Basketball League. Being primarily a point guard, Marco had to play behind Jerry Smith and Jason Crowe, finding it hard to get court time in a roster that was bulging with talent.
2012
For the 2012 New Zealand NBL season, Marco played for the Auckland-based franchise, the Harbour Heat.
2013
Following the Harbour Heat's decision not to participate in the 2013 New Zealand NBL season, Marco joined the Waikato Pistons pre-season training squad, returning to his previous club.[8] After a successful season, he was selected in the 2013 Tall Blacks China Tour extended squad.[9]
World University Games 2011
Marco attended the 2011 Summer University Games in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.[10] They had 7 games in total, but winning just 2. Tough games in pool play against Russia, Lithuania, Japan and Ukraine while they were able to salvage 1 win out of their pool against the Philippines in which Marco scored 21 points.
In this tournament Marco averaged 15.2 points per game 2.5 steals, 3.5 rebounds and 2 assists against some quality opposition which featured some of the best basketball players in the world.
