Mansa (Punjabi: ਮਾਨਸਾ) is a city and a municipal council in Mansa district of East Punjab (Indian Punjab). It is the administrative headquarters of Mansa district and is situated on the Bathinda-Jind-Delhi railway line and also on the Barnala-Sardulgarh-Sirsa highway.

The population is Punjabi-speaking and is wedded to the Malwa culture of Punjab.

Mansa is situated in the cotton belt of Punjab and therefore popularly called the "Area of white gold". Indeed agriculture forms the backbone of the district economy. During the months of November and December a visitor to this part of Punjab shall be the proud witness to the pristine, milky white bloom of cotton, as nature blossoms in her full glory.

Geography

Mansa is located at 29°59′N 75°23′E / 29.98°N 75.38°E / 29.98; 75.38.[2] It has an average elevation of 212 metres (695 feet).

Ancient period

The ancient history of the Mansa district has been traced to the Indus Valley civilization. The archaeological finds at different villages of Mansa district are almost similar to those of Harappa and Mohanjodaro. It is divided into three parts Pre-Harappa, Harappa and Late Harappa.

History

Mansa was formerly a part of Phulkia Sikh Dynasty (1722–1948) then part of Kaithal Sikh Kingdom (1762–1857). Mansa became district on 13 April 1992 from the erstwhile Bathinda district.

The city is said to have been founded by Bhai Gurdas who hailed from Dhingar, Distt. Mansa. He is said to have been married at this place among the Dhaliwal Jat Sikh. Once he came to his in-laws to take his wife along with him but they refused to send her. At this, Bhai Gurdas sat in meditation before the house of his in-laws. After some time, the parents of the girl agreed to send their daughter with Bhai Gurdas. But he refused to take her along with him, stating that he had now renounced the worldly way of life. In his memory, his Smadh was constructed where a fair is held every year in March-April. People in large numbers attend the fair and offer Laddus and Gur at Smadh. Class ‘A’municipality has been functioning in the town since 1952.

Education

Mansa is a city with the low literacy rate in the state, still the students of this town has done well in medical/engineering areas. The students have excelled in state exams as well as country's top institutions. The town has two Colleges, viz. Govt. Nehru Memorial Post Graduate College and S.D. Kanya Mahavidyala College,S.S College of Education for Girls , Sunam Road Bhikhi Mansa Distt. Mansa , 3 Senior Secondary School, 90 High School, 1 Middle School and 1 Primary School, Sand one Distt. Library. It has also one civil hospital, 3 dispencaries and 1 Ayurvedic and 1 Homeopathic dispensary. There are two police stations i.e. PS City and PS Sadar and also a railway station.

City needs serious attention from the government for the growth and development. The roads are in good state.

In the past, there have been increased number of cancer cases in the area for which various governments have "said" and promised to do a lot, but practically nothing has been done to find out what is the actual cause of problem.

Past few years have seen some changes with opening of new schools and B.Tech colleges but still a lot remains to be done and the area needs a strong leader who can advocate the voice of the people and work in the true sense for the development of area.

Hamlets

Joga is a town of 9,325 people about 20 minutes away from Mansa on Mansa Barnala Road. It is notable for the Freedom fighter Jangeer Singh Joga, belonging to Communist Party of India. He wasa national level freedom fighter and was the man who built the sleepy village of Joga to a bustling town with senior secondary schools for Girls & Boys,Library, Public School, Girls College, Civil Hospitals among other facilities. Principal K.D. Vashist and Mrs Bhupinder Kaur(who later retired as District Education Officer,Mansa) were among the notable principals of the Girls School Joga.

Hotels

There are many budget hotels in the city and a large number of marriage palaces are situated on Mansa-Bathinda road. Hotel Asha Continental, Hotel Green Paradise, Mehak Hotel are most famous. But other hotels are Celebration (Disc & Restaurant), Centre Point, R.M Hotel.

There is a cricket academy which provides coaching facilities for young cricketers. Mr Jagmohan Singh dhaliwal is the coach of the academy.

There is also a Kabaddi stadium where international kabaddi cup occurs.

Transport

Mansa is well linked to other cities, particularly the national capital, New Delhi, by an efficient rail and transport system. The nearest airports are located at New Delhi and Chandigarh which are 248 km and 180 km away by road respectively.New airports will be in working soon at ludhiana, International Airport at Mohali, Bhatinda. It is connected by rail and situated on the Delhi–Bathinda branch line of Northern Railway. Many trains like New Delhi–Bathinda Intercity Express,Ferozepur Mumbai Janta Express, Bikaner Guwahti Express and Punjab-Mail come to Mansa station. Besides, there are several passenger trains running between New Delhi and Mansa at regular intervals daily. Mansa is well connected to all the cities of Punjab by bus routes.

Demographics

As of the 2001 census, Mansa had a population of 87,707 in 16,080 households.[1] Mansa has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 59%. In Mansa, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
