Manjki Region
Manjki Region is a region of Punjab stretching from Nakodar to Jandiala and Phagwara to Banga and Rahon. Located between the River Beas and River Sutlej. Its name is similar to Majha Region of Punjab.
History
The Manjki was one of most developed and ancient areas of Punjab owing to its close proximity to the established city of Jalandhar and its locality to the Sutlej bearing fertile soil for the relatively consistent plaine. After 1947, this region experienced large scale emigration to Northern nations such as the UK, Canada and the US and consequently has the highest NRI count in the Indian Punjab Region. As a result of these developments, there has been considerable NRI investment into this area of Punjab which has resulted in comparative economic prosperity in this region.
Religion
In the present day, Sikhism predominates as the main religion of the Region. Before partition, the area had a sizable Muslim majority, in so far as that the Muslim League had hoped that the Jalandhar division of which it was situated within would be given to Pakistan .[1] The majority of Muslims of this area after partition moved to the Faisalabad district of Pakistan,[2] though a small minority opted instead for the urban centers of Lahore and Rawalpindi. A reasonable extent of Sikhs from the Lyallpur district inversely were located in the Doaba region, of which the Manjki is a sizable unit of.[3]
