Manayunk is a station located along the SEPTA Manayunk/Norristown rail line. It is located at Cresson and Carson Streets in the Manayunk neighborhood of northwest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
History
The original Manayunk station was built by the Philadelphia, Germantown and Norristown Railroad in 1834, a predecessor of Reading Railroad. It was located on Green Lane near the corner of Main Street. When the Pennsylvania Railroad built the Schuylkill Branch and built their own Manayunk station on the line, the old PG&N Depot was demolished in 1884. That same year, Philadelphia and Reading Railway built another station to replace the former station at the intersection of Cresson and Roxborough Streets. This second, street-level Manayunk Station was built as street level, much like the original station, and the nearby competition.[1]
The current station was built by the Reading Company in 1930 as part of a grade-separation project which eliminated running down the middle of Cresson Street. Despite the station building's suboptimal passenger location on the outbound side (going away from Center City Philadelphia), it is open for ticket sales on weekday mornings.
The line near Manayunk station serves as part of the border for the Manayunk Main Street Historic District, which has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1993.
Manayunk West station
As with Ivy Ridge, a second station (also named Manayunk originally) served Manayunk by way of the Cynwyd Line until September 1986. While the current station is along the line of the former Reading Company, the station on the foot of the massive Pencoyd Viaduct (northwest of the current station, and located on the corner of Dupont and High Streets) was part of the ex-Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) side of the line. It was the final station on the ex-PRR line (Schuylkill Branch) from 1960 to 1980. Designated by SEPTA as West Manayunk and then Manayunk West, it was discontinued when the line was cut back to its present terminus in Cynwyd.
